How does the 180/2 Apo perform with the 1.4x and 2x Apo ?

How does it compare with the 280/4 Apo-Telyt, considering the Summicron with 1.4x or 2x is 1 stop faster than the 280 alone or with 1.4x ?

I handled the 180 last week and while it is not a light lens, it is quite short and very comfortable to handhold.

My 280 Apo doesn't actually feel much lighter...

From my experience it performs very wel indeed with the 1.4x converter.

I'm not terribly impressed with the 180/2 Apo and the 2X Apo converter. It's OK in a pinch but it won't hold a candle to the 280/4 or 280/2.8. Even stopped down it's softer. The 1.4X works nicely.

I like the 1.4 myself with very very little loss of quality. Frankly leica makes the best extenders i ever used. Of course they are not cheap either

Thank you all,

although the comparison should be 180+1.4x vs 280/4 or 180+2x vs 280+1.4x.

As always with converters I guess that 180/2 + 1.4x should be fine, maybe comparable to the 280/4 once stopped down to the same effective aperture.

But 180+2x even stopped down won't match the 280+1.4x... a good one that is because mine as you know wasn't very good... :( it's on its way to Solms right now...

Marco the 1.4 works very nice on both the 180 and 280 and if i was going to get one that would be the one is the 1.4. Actually i have one and sold the 2x. The 180 with 1.4 is pretty close to the 280 f4 but i think the 280 f4 is the sharper lens to begin with. Yes it is that sharp, yours is serious need of calibration because even at F4 it is like a razor. I miss mine, one lens i regret selling was the 280

Guy,

I bought the 1.4x Apo along with the 280/4 and indeed from preliminar results it seems it practically doesn't affects the image quality of the naked lens.

But again my sample wasn't one of the best to judge image quality...

Too bad I can't mount the 1.4x on the 180/3.4 Apo-Telyt, nor on the 100/2.8 Apo-Macro.

Yes the 1.4 is limited to the 180 f2 and 280 plus the longer telyts. The NEWEST version of the 180 2.8 apo can take the 1.4
