hoppyman Posted July 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can anyone point me to the reference where the appearance of links is controlled in posts? I'm sure that I saw something in the Control panel or similar but can not locate it again. Some links appear as the name of the actual item linked to and some show only as a word within a sentence. for example with the hyperlink colour. This may not be a forum specific thing. Any useful comment welcomed.
Advertisement Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Hi hoppyman, Take a look here Question regarding links within posts. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted July 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 3, 2010 If links appear in a thread like this, someone has either manually edited the URL to show something simple, or the forum software has done it. I find that URLs pick up the title of the linked page if included in the original posting, but not if in an edit.
hoppyman Posted July 3, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted July 3, 2010 Thank you Andy. I don't want to click on links that do not show what they lead to. I know that this can happen with TinyURL for example (renaming to a desired word or simply the shortening process itself. Perhaps something like that is what is happening. That's fine, I'll keep both of your points there in mind. Now if I could only find where I saw that user setting about parsing links in the CP or FAQ or somewhere! stunsworth Posted July 3, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 3, 2010 Geoff, you see the formatting instructions that the bulletin board software allows here... BB Code List - vBulletin Community Forum Incidentally, in Firefox, and I suspect other browsers, if you 'hover' over a link the actual URL is shown in the bar at the bottom of the browser. That doesn't help with Tiny URL of course where you will just see the short URL.
andybarton Posted July 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 3, 2010 If you look at the check boxes, just below the box where you enter text, there is one which says "Automatically parse links in text" I suspect that might be the one you're looking for. bill_murray Posted August 6, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ive suddenly found that links within posts no longer work on my Ipad....all other links and links in posts on other sites work....and they work if I use my Imac....but using my Ipad here the link does'nt paste correctly. It seemed to change yesterday. Is it me? my Ipad? or has some setting in the forum changed? Any ideas welcome!
bill_murray Posted August 6, 2010 Share #8 Posted August 6, 2010 Sorted - it's a javascript setting set to on. Sorry if I wasted anygone's time.
wattsy Posted August 7, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 7, 2010 Sorted - it's a javascript setting set to on. Sorry if I wasted anygone's time. I've also noticed this problem. Something (javascript library?) definitely seems to have changed during the last day or so. Turning off JavaScript does alleviate the problem but isn't a solution in my book because I prefer to have JavaScript turned on (which is the default setting). bill_murray Posted August 8, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 8, 2010 You're right, Ian. Something did change; switching Ipad javascript off fixed it for this site... it would be useful to know why/what/whether whatever changed can be restored? Anyone have any idea what changed? adan Posted August 13, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 13, 2010 Re failed links in the past day or so - Andreas explained it in a post about websites in Barnack's Bar. Tracking software added temporarily that turned out to be Safari (thus iPad) incompatable. Should be undone now.
wattsy Posted August 13, 2010 Share #12 Posted August 13, 2010 Thanks Andy. Must be certain flavours of Safari. My desktop Safari has been fine. iPad Safari still doesn't open the links but it sounds like it will be sorted out in due course.
