FrankA Posted December 31, 2006 Share #1 Â Posted December 31, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the aperature ring work when the 14-50 lens is attached to an E-1 or other olympus body? Or is aperature still set with one of the wheels? Thanks

Or is aperature still set with one of the wheels? Thanks  The way it probably works is that the lens sends an "initial conditions" message to the body when powered on, which would include things like maximum and minimum aperture, current focal length, and, in the case of the Leica lenses, the current aperture setting, which the Olympus firmware would not recognize and ignore.  Similarly, as the aperture ring is changed, it would send a signal to the body (much like the "focus by wire" sends a signal that the focus ring is being rotated), which the Olympus firmware ignores as well.  Thankfully, the four-thirds standard appears to allow for extensions, and requires devices to ignore what they don't understand/support (much like HTML) rather than malfunction.
