ERROR 2 Message; as received from dealer

Just received a DMR, "mint" condition from a "reputable" dealer in Waltham, Massachusetts. I asked the sales person over the phone if they had checked the DMR. He replied, "yes" but they didn't look at the image from the DMR (Okay bozo, how about the image on the screen?). After I received it I put the DMR on an R8 and R9 that I have which both work with my other DMR back and guess what I got on the screen; the dreaded "ERROR 2" , message. I cleaned all the contacts, changed batteries (all four that I have), changed SD Cards and guess what: the "ERROR 2" message does not go away. Yes I'm a little miffed at the dealer. No, make that a lot miffed! But here's the question (knowing how rare DMRs are); do I send it back to the dealer or send it off to Leica to get it repaired? Does anyone have any idea about the cost of getting the ERROR 2 problem repaired or is Leica treating it as a warranty issue?

you might also, politely, gently mention that you are discussing this problem on the Leica forum to find solutions, but no one has been able to help you . . .

sometimes people respond better when they know the world is watching :p

By the way, I had a problem with my back up DMR which I bought used with a R8 from a Leica dealer about 3 years ago. Unfortunately the DMR wouldn't work properly on the R8 (although it did work fine with my R9). The dealer sent my R8 and DMR to Solms and footed the £800plus bill for the repair. No quibbles at all. But I called them very politely when things weren't right and it was sorted out in a very pleasant way. So, as a result, I was happy and I would certainly go back to that dealer again.

Hello,

ERROR #2 = contact Leica Factory as written in the instructions booklet !

I got this 2 years ago... this means that your electronics is out of order and need to be replaced by Leica Solms.

I waited 4 month to get it back repaired.

Good luck.

But, you should do this through your dealer. If you have bought a "mint" DMR, there is no reason at all why you should pay anything to have it made to work. This is not your responsibility, from what I can see.

If the dealer will not put this right, demand a full refund.

I agree with Andy. The board replacement that my DMR needed cost $1200 (think it was an "Error 2" message), or there about, and the DMR was in Solms for two or three months.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm taking your advice and contacted the dealer. They said that they would get back to me in a couple of days. I will keep you posted. Hmmmm ... I can hardly wait ...

  • 6 months later...

I've been doing a lot of travelling. As long as the economy stays down crime will stay up and we're very busy. Sorry for the lack of update. All ended well with the dealer paying for the repair (about $1,200 noted on the repair ticket). The dealer did the right thing. Leica NJ turned around the DMR in 2 to 3 weeks because we needed it for documentation on a case. The DMR has worked flawlessly since. It scares me that parts for the DMR are supposedly becoming scarce. We have two DMRs; one on an R8 and one on an R9. I don’t want to think about a DMR failure and having to switch glass and cameras. I would buy another DMR but they are hard to find. Like many others, I'm hoping (forever the optimist) that Leica will come up with a solution. Thanks for asking about the outcome.

P.S. Since the dealer came through I should mention his name, but I forgot who it was and the receipts are at the office. If I get a chance over the weekend I might stop by and get the name and post it here. Leica NJ certainly did come through on their end.
