wilfredo Posted December 30, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I took two shots of my partner this morning and was concerned that the focus was off. I later realized that I hadn't turned the 90 Elmarit all the way until it snapped into place. I've discovered that the lens mount on the M8 is a bit stiffer than on the M7. Any way I tried a test (nothing really technical here I'm not a techo whiz). I took a picture of a plaque with my Canon 20D using the 24-105 MM L lens set at 5.6, and then I took the same shot with the M8, 90mm Elmarit at the same aperture. To my surprise the black lettering on the Canon shot has a bit of a magenta cast and the Leica shot is pure black (no IR/UV filter used, I haven't gotten them yet). This can be best appreciated in the actual print. The sharpness on the Leica shot is also better. It seems the magenta problem may be hit and miss. Notice that my partner is wearing a black t-shirt under her jacket, and it remained black. I'm not suggesting that this M8 doesn't have the magenta cast on blacks problem, I've gotten some of those, but it seems to be hit and miss. DaveEP Posted December 30, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2006 Err..... on my (colour calibrated) screen, the t-shirt looks blue to me.... and not black. The lettering on the (Leica) plaque is black though....
steve_l Posted December 30, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 30, 2006 and it is mainly *synthetic* blacks that have a high coefficient of IR reflectance - T-shirt was probably cotton....
chetccox Posted December 30, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 30, 2006 t-shirt is blue on my screen as well.
chrism Posted December 30, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2006 I did exactly the same thing first time I used the Macro Elmar-M 90 with respect to extending it, but not rotating it to lock into full extension - beautifully focussed but about four feet behind the subject. When all else fails, read the instructions! Chris
arminw Posted December 30, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 30, 2006 I also see the T-shirt of your partner in Blue, and my monitor is calibrated. Also I would have loved to see a really sharp image of the 90mm lens on the M8. Do you think you could take another picture of your partner and demonstrate the quality and sharpness of the lens when taking portraiture ? wilfredo Posted December 30, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted December 30, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I guess you are all right. In my amazement that it wasn't purple I jumped the gun a bit, on careful examination it does appear as a dark blue on my screen as well, more like a faded dark blue. As I said, I have gotten the magenta problem but that aside, I am still surprised to see that the color on the plaque was much more accurate with the M8. wilfredo Posted December 30, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted December 30, 2006 Here's another head shot of my lady, this time with the 35mm Summicron, done later in the afternoon. I can't tell how pleased I am with the B&W images I am getting with the M8. Cheers, Wilfredo+ Benitez-Rivera Photography Welcome, dear visitor! rvaubel Posted December 30, 2006 Share #9 Posted December 30, 2006 Wilfredo You make me mad. Here you are bragging about how great your new M8 is, AFTER bitching and whining about the supposed theoritical deficiancies of the camera, and then just accidently finding one and buying it. And here I sit, on a waiting list for 4 months waiting,,and waiting. And whats worse, listening to non-owners tell me how stupid I am to even want such a defective, piece of shoot. BUT...Hope still springith eternal ! Rex
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 30, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 30, 2006 Yes even the barking dog get's a bone once in awhile. B&W is very very nice with the M8 but hey color ain't so bad either. I guess i own my two now just registered them both so there in the out of my dead cold hands stage now. 4 filters aren't i the lucky one. Took 2 46mm, 1 55mm and for some strange reason i took the 60mm and have no lens for it. maybe that Nocti will be a reality
johnastovall Posted December 30, 2006 Share #11 Posted December 30, 2006 Wilfredo, Between you and Guy this holiday season, you all are making it harder and harder for me to stay the course and wait on a better M8. I thought you were one of the rational ones here and now you are making it even harder... I'll just keep saying, "After PMA, maybe..."
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 30, 2006 Share #12 Posted December 30, 2006 Yea John but sometimes the course makes a sharp turn. ROTFLMAO I wonder what PMA will bring to market . I may have to go since it is 5 hours away.
wilfredo Posted December 31, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted December 31, 2006 Sorry John, I thought I would stay the course but it seems some things are just meant to be. I am frustrated by some of the issues with the M8, but the images have brought me more excitement than I can describe. I now feel I have a tool I can really put to use making the kind of quality images I've been hoping I could make. I had no intention of buying the camera at this time but a little angel told me after Christmas day "go buy the camera" so I did :-) Rex, I can understand how you feel. I think you will find that the wait will have been worth it when it finally arrives. Sure, Leica could have handled this better, but that aside, you will love your images. Guy, The barking dog gets the camera :-) Cheers, Wilfredo+

Hi John I know we've had a few run-ins over the M8 'over there' , but why don't you just go get one - like Wilfredo, you'll find that although it may be fatally flawed - it's still a thing of wonder and beauty . Whatever you do decide, may I take the opportunity of wishing you a very Happy New Year

I may have to go since it is 5 hours away. I've got to see what Canon does as to a new 1Ds and the 5D. But one of these days Leica may just ring down 90 port full flank speed..... Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 31, 2006 Share #16 Posted December 31, 2006 Canon needs to do something very radical to make it a primary camera and not sure there going there
rvaubel Posted December 31, 2006 Share #17 Posted December 31, 2006 I've got to see what Canon does as to a new 1Ds and the 5D. But one of these days Leica may just ring down 90 port full flank speed..... I love the 5D and 1Ds in their place, but the problem is, no matter how much they improve them, they are still big ass, honking cameras, and the kit requires a frigging roll around. Riley Posted December 31, 2006 Share #18 Posted December 31, 2006 i think it was robsteve who pointed out, that we are all a bit sensitive to colour shifts and the like here, post this early M8 experience previously unnoticed shifts in other cameras will now become apparent
