Leica M8 Shutter Noise Compared

Why does the M8 even really need a shutter. Since the sensor itself could take the picture any time it wanted to, I would have prefered a shutter that only closed when I take off the lens.

May be because (up till now) the start up time for a sensor ist much longer then the release time for a shutter ?

I suspect these numbers do not tell the entire story. Kind of like automobile testing where carA rates a 99, carB rates a 98 but carC is a death trap with the lowest rating, it only got a 97.999

I will say I would have expected the rangefinder to be much quieter than the slr. Maybe they need to factor in "how long" the noise is made versus how loud it actually was, mulltiply the two figures together for a "guide" for comparison. Make the comparison in places where the noise is an issue such as dark quiet restaurants, churches, theatre performances and places where slow shutter speed noise is a real issue. I would then suspect the M8 would only be a bit louder due to it's auto rewind of shutter than the rest of the Mseries cameras. (To bad there isn't a menu choice to turn off auto rewind and let you push a button to rewind to avoid prolonged noise. Maybe in the M9 !!)

Is anyone here old enough to remember the time Nixon stopped his White House press conference inorder to eject a Nikon user because the shutter noise was bothering him? Was anyone working in DC then? Was anyone here alive then?

Shutter noise is a priority for some photojournalists and documentary photographers. Most times it can't be heard over the noise at occasions such as weddings. Again those other old Leica users will remember the crew at Marty Forscher's at 63 West 47th Street in New York to whom we intrust our new leicas to be dismembered and refitted with brass gears from Lieca's inventory.

Those were the days........

Sorry about that, youngsters.

For the most part, this so-called "noise issue" is nothing more than navel-gazing. In 99 percent of all shooting situations the M8's noise will be a non-issue for most photographers. I'd like the noise duration to be shorter, but only for aesthetic reasons -- it will have zero effect on my shooting.

By the way, Nixon was a sociopath. (I was a voting adult when he was president.)
