jaapv Posted July 12, 2010 Share #22 Posted July 12, 2010 Interesting article, and I do agree, but his maths are wrong in the Leica world - 2250$ would have paid for one, max 2 front element replacements if he had been renting out Leica lenses... Nicoleica Posted July 12, 2010 Share #23 Posted July 12, 2010 An interesting article, but I disagree with several points, including those about the types of glass employed in lens/filter construction. But my main point of disagreement is that of protection. Although a filter may not protect your lens too much if you drop it from substantial height, or impale it upon some sharp object, it will protect your valuable lens front element from normal day-to-day hazards. (Such as scratches caused by grit or other items in your bag or pocket should the lens cap fall off, minor knocks and scrapes, etc.) I'd much rather have to pay $50-$100 or so for a new filter than loose the use of my lens for several weeks while it was being repaired, not to mention the additional cost of such a repair. To my mind, using a filter is like carrying an umbrella. It won't help you much in a tempest, but it will keep you dry in most other situations.
