luigi bertolotti Posted June 8, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 8, 2010 Vaguely inspired by Sony NEX design... I confess that me too use to make some 3D CAD models just for fun, but don't see the reason to post them in whatsoever site... ... once you have finely modeled the red dot the rest is easy... I made also a "digital Visoflex"...

zlatkob Posted June 8, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 8, 2010 The LCD looks nice & big, but otherwise that is a scary, ugly camera. All of those lines on the front ... yikes! No shutter speed dial. Body too boxy and too big for the lens. Shutter release sized for pre-schoolers. The top and bottom have an overhang like an old soda can.

I see that also the comments on leicarumors site point 80% in the direction of uglyness... appreciate that one of them has quoted the historical Argus art-deco camera: any Leica site is anyway surfed by some people with good knowledge... adan Posted June 8, 2010 Share #14 Posted June 8, 2010 So - ummm - you folks DID notice the tie to the new iPhone? Which Steve Jobs likened to a "beautiful old Leica camera?" Press clutch pedal - engage sense of humor. Based on the relative size compared to the mounted 50 Summilux - it must be using an iPad-sized screen on the back. zlatkob Posted June 8, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 8, 2010 I noticed... but given the source, I'd be curios to verify if Jobs REALLY said it... He did really say it. It's in the video. He was being a clever salesman, using the concept of an old Leica to evoke feelings about precision and beauty. It's hard to say the iPhone has much in common with an old Leica -- well, it is a camera too -- but it is still interesting that such a description would be applied to an object as modern as the iPhone. It's hard to say the iPhone has much in common with an old Leica -- well, it is a camera too -- but it is still interesting that such a description would be applied to an object as modern as the iPhone. Jobs says a lot of things... but the bottomline is that if you stop drinking the Koolaid, iPhone 4 is pretty much the same as the 3GS which is pretty much the same as the 3G. Yeah, it's slightly faster and has a 3 axis gyro/accelerometer, 802.11n and a camera on both sides but that's all been done. In fact the "face to face" conversation feature is what telephone companies used to push 3G in Asia about 5 years ago. It never really caught on. Ultra high-resolution screen? That's the opposite of what we get from Leica. =P The only thing the iPhone has in common with a Leica is that it has a camera and microprocessors. iPhones are built to be cheap and disposable (I've had mine replaced 3 times in 6 months). They're designed for mass production using the cheapest widely available parts and assembled in third world countries. They're not handmade by skilled workers and continuously checked to ensure specifications are met or exceeded at every step in the assembly process. hoppyman Posted June 8, 2010 Share #19 Posted June 8, 2010 There is another thread about this. But check out that designer's 'Alien Mouse' from his projects. Another superbly practical and important bit of development! You have to award points for the large red dot in his camera concept though, Agfa meets Leica. zlatkob Posted June 9, 2010 Share #20 Posted June 9, 2010 Jobs says a lot of things... but the bottomline is that if you stop drinking the Koolaid, ... I don't drink Koolaid, but I agree that the iPhone is worlds away from an "old Leica". The reference to Leica design is a very clever way to sell the iPhone design. Each can be said to be precise and beautiful in its own way. There are some examples of Apple's design getting some inspiration from German industrial designer Dieter Rams: 1960s Braun Products Hold the Secrets to Apple's Future It's not surprising that Apple would reference Leica too. Apart from having a camera (actually two), the differences between an iPhone and an old Leica certainly far outweigh the similarities. Of course, this is related to their functions. The old Leica was designed to one thing for many years. The iPhone is designed to do dozens of things (or thousands of things if you count all of the Apps) for relatively few years. I suppose the iPhone could be designed to do very many things for many years, but that might not make much sense given the present fast pace of technology. iPhones are sold with a service year contract that ends up costing quite a lot, so they are not cheap when you figure in the whole cost of ownership and usage.
