The E1 is a camera I am very curious about. Its owners often seem near religious about it. I myself used Olympus cameras in my early photography days, so I can get nostalgic about it. I am very curious to see what Olympus does about the viewfinder on the E1 replacement.

Yes, I am sceptical too, but considering how many people I respect state that they love the E1, I think it is worth keeping an open mind. I will certainly take a look at one when it comes out, although I cannot imagine that I would trade the M8 in for anything.

Do they have Canon or DMR/M8? Come on!!! 4/3" sensors??? What; are they buying scrap wafers?

You have very strong opinions about this. Have you tried one?

Nope!

No need to look for a new love with Oly DSLR when I am completely happy with my 5D, and now with Leica lenses, I am even happier.

Hello Again- (first chance I'd had to come back and visit)

It's 10:30 pm in NY and my day begins at 5:00 am but...

We have had some interesting discourse here. I would not trade my M-6's nor my M lenses nor my R4SP or R lenses or Null right now either. Had I the coppers for an M8 and computer to make it sail, I'd be there as well. This too will happen it time.

There is certainly something very special about Leica. I remember processing my first roll of Tri-X from the M6 in the late 80's . I looked at the wet negatives and knew this was it!

What I like about the E1 is that it is solid and straight foreward. An M-6 type feel. What I like about the lenses for it is that they work as the system was designed to be. Yes, results with R lenses are very nice, perhaps better than Olympus lenses (in ideal conditioins where time is of a secondary matter) but, the Olympus glass is faster to work with and leaves less to chance. To me, photography is about the moment and grabbing it before it disapperars. (I'd never dream of using non Leica glass on an M either).

What bothers me about digital is its longevity. As a high school photography teacher, I see Minolta 100 and 200 series, Canon AE1's FTB's etc which my students use from their parents/grand parents and these dinosaurs still perform. We have a K-1000 which the school bought in 1980 that's still in daily use today. Can this be said about digital? Something which changes "faster than the Denver weather patterns" (Julieanne Kost). But yes, I do digital in my classes as well and use my E1 (and 5050) to get a handle on it all.

So...

Here's to great images and "the spirit of inquiry and debate" (Dr. Ralph Edelbach-Trenton State College (now known as The College of NJ)).

Cheers for the Best-

Mark, I am not looking for a new love, I am just curious. I would say that if you haven't tried one, you might want to consider having a less strong opinion about it. Apparently the E1 has a nice finder. I don't know how it is possible, considering the average 4/3 tunnels, but I respect the people who have said so, so I reserve judgement until I have tried one.
