craigrmurray Posted May 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone out there think that Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, KS will stick with their statement (on their website) that Kodachrome processing will cease at the end of 2010, or that they may extend that deadline. After Kodak announced last summer that it would discontinue the film, I bought 30 or 40 rolls of it, thinking it would not be a problem to shoot and process it within 18 months. Now, however, I find that I have only shot 8 or 9 rolls, and with only seven months remaining for processing, I'm getting a little nervous. I'm sure I could sell off some of it (it's all in the freezer), but only as a last resort. I have not contacted Dwayne's, but am curious if anyone else has spoken with or written to them. Advertisement Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Hi craigrmurray, Take a look here Dwayne's Photo -- Kodachrome Processing Deadline. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
adan Posted May 24, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2010 I doubt Dwayne's will go MUCH past the deadline, but if they get a rush of "last ever Kodachrome holiday snapshots" after Xmas, they may well run the line into January 2011 to complete the orders. It's pretty much a question of economics - if they are getting enough volume to make the line pay (or, for customer goodwill, at least break even), they may keep it running until the volume dries up (or they can't get chemicals from Kodak). If the volume drops after summer vacations to the point where it doesn't pay, they will likely quit as soon as they've made good their 12/31/10 commitment. If I were Dwayne's - I'd want to see how volume was trending in November before committing to a deadline extension.
surfer dude Posted May 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 24, 2010 Wouldn't it be best to ask Dwayne's, much as you've asked here (ie you have a L0T of film, and is there any chance a grace period may be considered beyond the stated deadline)? Cheers, Phil
budrichard Posted May 24, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 24, 2010 I certainly would take Dwayne's at thier word and make sure your K is in thier hands before 1/1/2011. I know I will and I have a lot of K left to go on my project.-Dick
craigrmurray Posted May 25, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted May 25, 2010 Thanks, everyone -- that all makes sense. And Phil, you're right -- I was feeling a bit lazy the other night, and should have just called Dwayne's -- would've probably taken less time than to post to the forum. I was only curious if anyone else had spoken with them. Guess I'll give 'em a call, then post the results.
craigrmurray Posted May 25, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted May 25, 2010 Andy (and to all): I just spoke to Dwayne's photo. They told me to check back in October, as their continuance of the processing line is contingent on the volume of business they do this fall, plus the availability of chemistry. Again, as in most things commercial, the market dictates all. Guess I better put the motor on the SL2 MOT and burn up some KR.
cocker Posted May 25, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) FWIW I just got 2 rolls back from processing. In the box was a slip saying all processing must reach them by November 30 2010.

Keith, did you send your Kodachrome via the Swiss lab or direct to Dwaynes in Kansas? The Kodak website isn't entirely clear on the matter for UK users and my pre-paid mailers have the old Wimbledon address on them (which I suspect is now going to be a bit of dead-end). cocker Posted May 28, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 28, 2010 Hi Ian, Sent via the Swiss Lab (Kodak Photo Service SA, Case Postale, 1001, Lausanne, Switzerland). I think thats the only way to go for the UK.

tgray Posted May 28, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 28, 2010 I would think the chemistry is the big problem - I think they get it from Kodak. I would imagine unless there is still a large volume of film coming in, they aren't going to risk ordering a big batch of (expensive) chemistry from Kodak to continue processing past the deadline. stunsworth Posted May 28, 2010 Share #13 Posted May 28, 2010 Dwayne, is not the only one processing Kodachrome. Provided you're not in a hurry... "Please allow between one and six months for return to you" Also $42 a roll for processing, as opposed to $14.50 at Dwaynes. I don't think Dwaynes will be losing too many orders. Farkle-Mpls Posted June 3, 2010 Share #18 Posted June 3, 2010 I read on one of these forums that it's not so much of issue of getting chemistry from Kodak as some of the chemicals haven't been made by Kodak in several years. Rumor has it the color couplers haven't been made in seven years and once they're gone, they're gone. Maybe someone can confirm or deny this. I read it somewhere which, at the time, seemed to be a credible source.

mdozier Posted October 11, 2010 Share #20 Posted October 11, 2010 I also spoke to Dwayne's a few weeks ago and they confirmed that Kodak has stopped making the chemicals and when they're out that's it. They indicated to me that the deadline was pretty firm.
