craigrmurray Posted May 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone out there think that Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, KS will stick with their statement (on their website) that Kodachrome processing will cease at the end of 2010, or that they may extend that deadline. After Kodak announced last summer that it would discontinue the film, I bought 30 or 40 rolls of it, thinking it would not be a problem to shoot and process it within 18 months. Now, however, I find that I have only shot 8 or 9 rolls, and with only seven months remaining for processing, I'm getting a little nervous. I'm sure I could sell off some of it (it's all in the freezer), but only as a last resort. I have not contacted Dwayne's, but am curious if anyone else has spoken with or written to them. adan Posted May 24, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2010 I doubt Dwayne's will go MUCH past the deadline, but if they get a rush of "last ever Kodachrome holiday snapshots" after Xmas, they may well run the line into January 2011 to complete the orders. It's pretty much a question of economics - if they are getting enough volume to make the line pay (or, for customer goodwill, at least break even), they may keep it running until the volume dries up (or they can't get chemicals from Kodak). If the volume drops after summer vacations to the point where it doesn't pay, they will likely quit as soon as they've made good their 12/31/10 commitment. If I were Dwayne's - I'd want to see how volume was trending in November before committing to a deadline extension. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

They told me to check back in October, as their continuance of the processing line is contingent on the volume of business they do this fall, plus the availability of chemistry. Keith, did you send your Kodachrome via the Swiss lab or direct to Dwaynes in Kansas? The Kodak website isn't entirely clear on the matter for UK users and my pre-paid mailers have the old Wimbledon address on them (which I suspect is now going to be a bit of dead-end). I would imagine unless there is still a large volume of film coming in, they aren't going to risk ordering a big batch of (expensive) chemistry from Kodak to continue processing past the deadline. "Please allow between one and six months for return to you" Also $42 a roll for processing, as opposed to $14.50 at Dwaynes. I don't think Dwaynes will be losing too many orders. Rumor has it the color couplers haven't been made in seven years and once they're gone, they're gone. Maybe someone can confirm or deny this.
