gdbale Posted May 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that the m8 is coming down in price I'm planning on upgrading from the digilux 3. I am looking for some advice on lens choice. I realize this is somewhat subjective to shooting style, etc but any opinions would be appreciated. I am debating (like a lot it seems) on whether to go with the 35mm or 50mm lens. The idea is for my general purpose lens. If I went with the 50 I would eventually try and get a 90mm and a 28mm wide angle lens... if I went with the 35mm I wouldn't bother with the 28mm but would still seek the 90mm. I guess what I am questioning is the versiatlity of the 35mm. Best thing would be to go out and try but no opportunity at the moment. Cheers

sanyasi Posted May 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2010 I suspect that I am outlier, but I much prefer the 50 2.0 Summicron to the 35 2.0 Summicron. I am doing general walking around city photography. I find that the 50 gives me a more "crowded" image, which is what I like. With the 35, I find there is too much empty space. I am planning a trip to India and I think the 35 will be put to good use given the crowded streets, but I could live without the 35 very easily. The 50 and 75 make it easier to eliminate the "slubs" and boxy grey automobiles, at least for me. I should note, I have experienced some flaring with the 50mm Summicron. Still haven't determined whether that is my incompetence or inherent with the lens, but I am trying to figure out what contributes to it. For the most part, however, the 2.0 50 handles very well. My comments are based on my experience with an M9, which is full frame. You will have to take into account the lack of full frame when making your decision regarding the M8 and reading the comments you will receive. I believe, but check, that a 35mm lens on the M8 get you to about a 50mm effective number. Jack Siegel
richam Posted May 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2010 Since you're going for the M8, you will have a 1.33 crop factor. So you should be considering a 28mm or 35mm as your primary lens. These will give you approximately 37mm and 47mm field of view, respectively. I like the 28, and it stays on the M8 most of the time.
Ed_K Posted May 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 25, 2010 I guess i am a 50mm kind of guy, i used to have a 50 lux to go with my M4P, then i traded it in for a 35 lux to go with the M6. Somehow i miss the little guy and now that i am waiting for my M9, i already traded in again this 35 lux back to the latest 50 cron. This has always been an interesting topic that goes round and round, depends on who will response your thread, there will always be a different answer. parigby Posted May 26, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 26, 2010 This is an interesting thread for me likewise, simply because l am going through the same process. At the moment l am going with 28mm, 50mm cron with my M8. What l can't decide is whether to go 75mm or 90mm
beewee Posted June 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2010 I have the M8.2 with 18, 28, 50, 90. On a recent 3 week shoot in asia, I took the m8.2 w/ 28, 50, 90 as well as the canon 5d2 w/ 16-35 and 70-200 (didn't get the 18 until after the trip, if I had, the canon kit would probably have been left at home). Anyway, the M8.2 + 28 combo made for 40% of all the pics i took. It was a near 50/50 split between the canon/leica kit. I find the 28 on the M8 works very well for street shooting. dpattinson Posted June 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) My most used lens on my M8 has definitely been my 35 summilux asph. I liked 35mm on my M7, and had assumed I would like the 28 summicron on my M8 due to the similar fov - however the 35 lux has been my lens of choice. Of course it depends on what you generally shoot, but I'd say either the 28 or 35 are the best 'all-round' lenses for the M8. If you have the opportunity, I would choose a 35 lux asph for the additional stop as it's very useful in lower light. Whichever you choose, do make sure that it focuses correctly on your M8
gdbale Posted June 6, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted June 6, 2010 Think I'm gonna be after a Leica Summicron 35mm Pre-ASPH (4th version) as its said to have the best bouquet and should be within my price range. Also, is it true that the f1.4 summilux will partiallly block the viewfinder? What is the going rate on the pre-ASPH summicron. Looking at one which is priced at 1100 pounds but thinking this may be the higher end?
