jphoto Posted December 27, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings everybody I have been registered for two years but have been just lurking around occasionally until now. I guess I'm now officially doomed after buying a M6 last week. I had been playing with the idea of having M with a 28mm or a bit wider wideangle and a 50mm for traveling and documenting life in general, but certainly didn't expect it to happen anytime soon. I recently visited my local Leica retailer to check if the arrival of the M8 would reflect on older M bodies and things just kind of happened... I ended up getting a '96 M6 and a brand new 25mm Zeiss Biogon to cover my wide angle needs and started searching for a 50mm Summicron. I have also owned CM for few years and have used it for snapshots and as my take it everywhere camera and I love the image quality. I went for a holiday last summer with a D200 and the CM. I was very impressed with the images from my D200 but after developing the film from my CM few months after the trip, I wished I had used it more since the results got me more thrilled than the digital stuff. For me shooting film still feels more easier and relaxing. Digi has many advantages but the workflow of shooting a roll of slide film is less stress full than shooting raw - downloading - adjusting - processing - saving - and making several backups. Also getting away from my Mac and Photoshop is nice since I am a graphic designer and spend a lot of time in that environment. I can't wait to get my first roll processed, I'll post some pics if there is any decent ones. Regards Jouko

brunom Posted December 28, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 28, 2006 Jouko It's interesting to hear that you chose the 25mm lens first, and are now looking for a Summicron. We all have different photographic needs, and my thoughts would have been along the lines of : The 25mm is a very good lens, but is quite big [long] and requires a separate finder [ and has a diferent filter size] whereas for instance, the new 28mm Asp Elmarit is really small and can be used without any extra finder when used with an M6. I don't think there is a great deal of difference in the prices ? This lens with a Summicron would in my opinion have made the mini-outfit much more user friendly and compact ? I'd be interested in know why you chose specifically the 25mm lens ? Regards Bruno
jphoto Posted December 28, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted December 28, 2006 Filling up my first roll would be easier if we were not in the middle of the darkest period of the year. The main ingredient of photography (light) is on short supply at the moment, but I'll get there eventually. Bruno, I can see that my choice of lenses might be a bit odd. The 28mm Elmarit is something that I had in my mind for a wide angle since the wider 24mm or 21mm Leicas that I wanted would stretch my budget too much. The 25mm Zeiss with the viewfinder was already on discount as it was the last one my retailer had since he was going to stop selling Zeiss lenses for now. I got a good offer on the Zeiss with the M6 so I saw it as a good start for building my M set up. Also I got whopping seven degrees more of angle of view compared to the 28mm lens. What comes to the size of the Zeiss, for me it is far from big. It is hard for me to consider any type on M gear big after dragging around my Nikon F5/D200 and lenses or my Bronica ETRsi set up! Having the same filter size would be a useful feature, but I will anyway buy a UV and yellow filter for each lens since I hate fiddling filters between lenses when I'm shooting. I will probably buy only one orange and red filter since they won't be used that frequently and use a step up ring for them with the 50mm lens so there shouldn't be that much trouble with the filters. brunom Posted December 28, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 28, 2006 Jouko Thanks - but I think your choice is no more unusual than mine - we have different photo needs. Good luck with your new camera and lenses. Bruno
jphoto Posted December 28, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted December 28, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yup, that's the way it goes. I'm intrested to see how far I can go with the two lens set up (when I get the 50mm one and actually have two lenses). I might complete my set up with a 90mm Summicron in the future but first things first. Cheers Jouko
