tom0511 Posted December 27, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) While I try to avboid flash as much as I can when shooting M, I still would like to have a flash unit for the M8. Some questions: 1) How much difference makes TTL-flash metering compared to use a flash with auto when using the M8? Any experiences? 2) Is there a posibility to use older Metz-flashes via adapter for M8-TTL (like 32ct7 or ct8)? 3) Are you aware of any flash with a movable reflector (for indirect flash) which supports M8-ttl and is not as big as the Metz 54? 4) How good works the sf24d? thanks a lot, cheers, Tom
Advertisement Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Hi tom0511, Take a look here flash for M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Eoin Posted December 27, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 27, 2006 The only question I can answer for you is no 4. The SF24D works very well with the M8. It's small, light and easy to slip into your pocket. I'm not to keen on the fully auto mode, it seems to send out 2 flashes, pre flash for metering and the exposure flash, this tends to make people blink (eyes closed) in the photos. I have also noticed with peoples facial skin tones, in paticular men, seem to have flushed complections around the cheeks, nose and chin areas, the best way I can discribe this is the "garden gnome" effect:D and that's with using the 486 UV/IR Cut filter. I don't know if this will happen with other flashes. The SF24D seems to expose correctly in either the fully auto or A mode, the batteries lithium CR123 tend to be expensive and somewhat difficult to find when you need them in an emergency. No tilt or swivel, just buy a Nikon off show cord. It's a nice compact unit, handy to have in the bag for those moments when you need flash. marknorton Posted December 27, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 27, 2006 There was talk about a new flash coming out from Metz for the M8 - Leica admitted as such at Photokina. The SF-24 is OK, but it wins no prizes either for build quality, the horrible LCD display and lack of moveable head. It's much too intrusive for typical M8 use. So too is the Metz 54 which is huge so I hope any new offering will concentrate on what you might use one for - carefully balanced fill flash/available light, not the ability to light up the other end of a room. tom0511 Posted December 27, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted December 27, 2006 thanks guys, while I find it overpriced i just decided to get the sf24d. The 54 is just much too big for my taste to use it on the M8. Who knows when Leica will announce the new flash and when it will be available. thanks for the infos.
