I bet a bunch of you are thinking "here goes Wilfredo again, protesting the release of the M8 before it was street ready" well, not really. Here's my story for the day. I've been reading about how difficult it is to find one. Well, until today, I never tried. What convinced me to go for it was the photography I've been following on the Photo section of this forum. In particular the People section and the B&W pictures presented there. They are very convincing. So much so that I decided today I would purchase an M8, with the updated firmware. So I called Sammys Camera here in Southern California and they told me they had about thirty people on their wating list. Then I called CAL's Camera in Costa Mesa. They told me they had one, a silver model they just got last week from Germany with the updated firmware. I asked them to hold it for me, went over to the store, and bought it. I left the store with a smile on my face. I haven't even had a chance to put a lens on it, and won't be able to play with it until tomorrow.

Right now I'm at a friends house for dinner, but I thought some of you folks on the Forum might be amused by the fact that I caved in. I'm thinking that when I start my new career as a Magnum photographer this camera will come in handy.

Cheers and Merry Christmas,

Wilfredo

By the way, it was Alessandro's pictures from China that mostly influenced me to go for the M8, even with some of its limitations. I take it as a sign of divine providence that I decided to buy one today, and one was actually waiting for me. Wow, I pray it will lead to new and wonderful photographic experiences. I'm excited!!!!

Cheers,

Thomas,

I had some funds set aside, and got a good tax refund this year which I had saved, so I didn't have to mortgage the house :-) No it's not a joke!!!! This is for real.

I guess this is a real Christmas story because in the end, it was the only thing that really put a smile on my face in terms of a gift that I could have gotten for myself.

Cheers,

As one who still has the original hardware and software, I think this is the most wonderful camera given to us for a very long time. So much energy has been focused on what the M8 won't do that most of the forum members have stopped trying to show what it will do. Go out and shoot and show all what you can capture with this marvelous machine.

O.K. Wilfredo,

I bet you can see the huge smile on my face all the way from California to Oz! My prediction of a few days ago has come to pass.;) ....... even sooner than I expected.

I am seriously pleased for you and reckon you must have been doing what I always do to myself appropo 'gear acquisitions.' ie. playing devil's advocate. Looking forward to your posts once you get that M8 fired up. I suspect your style will be be quite evocotave.

BTW, don't sell your film Leicas. There is still room for them!

Cheers,

Erl

Wilfredo,

congratulation. If you are willing to ride the tiger, don't fear the teeth....;) but, as you know, it's the heart that makes the photograph, the camera is only the pen.

All the best for 2007

Bernd

Wilfredo,

Having seen some others M8 postings here I am sure you will produce some great results. I remember you having moved from an MP to M7 and I always liked your picture posts, so I think you have a talent that no matter what camera you used, you'd make something unique and interesting. The M8 won't let you down I am sure!

Well, it all worked out for you. All the best with your new camera, I know it is in very capable hands.

Having looked at your posts, I am now "considering" getting into film and scanning and as a real additional challange developing my own B&W.

Wilfredo,

That's an amazing story! And I'm particularly surprised that you made the move so quickly given some of the comments you've made about the M8. (I'm still waiting for mine.) I'll be very interested to hear what you think of the camera. I know your photos will be spectacular -- have fun.

Thank you all for the kind comments about my work and your enthusiasm about the purchase. I didn't have a chance to fiddle around with the camera yesterday but I've been reading the instruction manual today and getting a feel for the camera. I charged the battery and here's a picture of an Icon I just did for a friend who wanted a copy. I couldn't find a copy of this particular Icon for sale anywhere so I took the one I have out to the yard and snapped one picture using the 35mm Summicron. I just made a SUPER B size print and all I can say is, WOW! It looks better than the original. I wish I could do it even bigger but my Epson 2200 can't go any bigger. Next month I'll be receiving the Epson 3800, which is one of the reasons I also opted for the M8. I'm looking forward to making 16X20 prints. I did have to tweak the Color Balance because it was a bit on the reddish side. Since I've been following the threads on this forum, that didn't surprise me. It took me about two seconds to fix that.

I'm going out now with the camera to see what I can find and shoot. Wish me luck :-)

Cheers,

Wilfredo
