Gamma Settings

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a Spyder 3 Studio kit and I very happy with it. I use a Mac Book Pro and a Mac Cinema Screen. When calibrating both monitors I've used the recommended setting of "2.2 - 6500" for the Gamma Setting.

I wondered if anyone who is more experienced can confirm that this is right for Mac (I seem to remember at one time different Gamma settings were recommended for Mac and Windows) and what the effect is of reducing, or increasing the gamma value.

I did do a search "Gamma and Settings" but was surprised when nothing relevent turned up.

Comments would really be appreciated.

Regards

Tom

A gamma of 2.2 is correct for any modern mac, and your MBP pro certainly qualifies as modern. Back in the day, Apple did use a gamma of 1.8 on its monitors, but has recommended using a gamma of 2.2 for some time now. However, Apple has also caused endless confusion by leaving the default gamma setting on OS X at 1.8 for all versions of OS X up until Leopard. It's only with Snow Leopard that the default became 2.2

The official Apple recommendation is here: Aperture: Color and gamma settings for print and web

Hi Sandy

Many thanks for your comments and the link to the Apple information. The information contained there more or less endorses the seetings I've used and so I feel a lot more comfortable.

Thanks again and best regards.

Tom
