jaapv Posted December 25, 2006 Share #1 Â Posted December 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the impression that the chrome on my M6 is more scuff-resistant than that on my M8. It is rather unimportant, as it is a tool to be used and maybe it is because the M8 has not left my side since the day I got it, but I have the feeling it does show subtle marks of use easier. xrogers Posted December 25, 2006 Share #2 Â Posted December 25, 2006 I haven't noticed any difference in the black finish look or durability between the M7 and M8. Â Clyde Rogers

leicabug Posted December 25, 2006 Share #4 Â Posted December 25, 2006 I have used my M6 chrome for almost 10 years, and I can't see any scratch or mark on it. I will get a M8 chrome in the future and hopefully the finish is as durable as my M6.
mr_big Posted December 25, 2006 Share #5 Â Posted December 25, 2006 I personally like the worn look of a camera. I remember when I was a working photojournalist with a new black Nikon F, I welcomed the day when it had a few dings and the brass finally started to show through. I'm not going to intentionally bang up my M8 but I'm also not going to baby it either.
scanner Posted December 25, 2006 Share #6 Â Posted December 25, 2006 I thing what Leica dont care is same strong like M6, they hopping people gonna buy in near time M9. Any ways nobody who gonna use it M8 after 20 years, this exactly can tell. Â Â Â Please try not to be too negative like your answer in the threat of the banding. I do!  This is one beautiful camera and will be valued even when there's an M9 so no one should have the slightest worry. I doubt whether there would be a lot of fundamental changes. hopefully they'll take to heart some of the feedback especially the ideas of Guy, Sean and Jamie. I think that a modest increase in the pixel count might be all that would be done.  The largest change I'd be happiest with would be an open access firm ware system for all digital cameras so that creativity can really push the envelope. However that chance of happening is less than a flock of pigs flying over my house!  All the defects of the M8 don't amount to much when corrected. Even without any corrections the camera is still magnificent for landscape, most people photography and architecture.  The finest hand tailored suits stil require touch ups in the final fitting. So the issues with the M8 don't bother me now that I'm shooting with the camera exclusively for the past 4 weeks.  As far as the finish is concerned, IMHO, that's something more for collectors. I could care less about scratches and minor dings on my cameras as they are merely tools! If I was collecting cameras for an increase in value or for a museum I'd think differently.  I haven;t seen any special fragility with the black version. There are no marks on mine!I'd imagine that would show marks very easily since anodization is just a surface effect.  Just use the camera and have fun! Don't D'is the Leica people, they are working hard to please us!  Asher  The Open Photography Forums Initiative
tom0511 Posted December 25, 2006 Share #8 Â Posted December 25, 2006 I cant comment on the durability of the black m8 yet, have only used it for some days. My 10 year old M6 does show very well usage. Â Another related question: How durable is the glass of the M8-display/screen? Anybody using some foil on it? Or is it scratch resistant, if I throw the m8 in my bag?

j. borger Posted December 25, 2006 Share #10 Â Posted December 25, 2006 A chrome version showing wear after such a short time ..... that's another downer concerning the M8 for me. I see the camera as a tool that happens to be handsome too. However, why should one worry if one is getting the dream pictures you can make with this camera?  Am I alone in thinking like this or are Leica somehow supposed to be above normal wear and tear?  Asher  The Open Photography Forums Initiative

I wouldn't worry about it. Sean  One of the nice things about the old black Leicas with the brass bodies was the appearance of a golden patina around the areas of usage, especially the edges. The newer Ms have magnesium bodies so that effect was lost. However, the new M8 does have a brass bottom plate. I think the top plate is brass too, although I know the body is magnesium.  There is a complicated aesthetic about an individuals perception of beauty. Some want there pride and joy to always look like new, fresh as a daisy. Others like their cameras to look like tools, well cared for but showing signs of honest work and the patina of a well loved antique.  Rex

I've got a black M8 and black lenses, and when Tony Rose said he had a bunch of silver M8s a couple days ago, I thought about ordering one (I'd like to get a second body.) But then, I thought, I wonder how the black lenses look on a silver body? I was afraid to ask because I figured I'd get bashed...So I appreciate how you feel. I was afraid to ask because I figured I'd get bashed...So I appreciate how you feel. JC  Black lenses actually look really good on a silver M8, its like wearing a dark jacket on lighter pants, or vice versa. Regarding the wear, I do concur that the silver gets dirty really easily, but I have yet to see any scratches despite using and handling the camera an average of 10 hour days. I tend to wipe off dust, fingerprints and tiny splash marks at the end of my work day, but I do that primarily to avoid dust to enter in the sensor area and build up around the knobs. Other than that I don't really worry too much.  Alessandro
marknorton Posted December 26, 2006 Share #20 Â Posted December 26, 2006 I think black lenses on a chrome body are fine. Just look at a Digilux 2 to get an idea. Â I'm finding the chrome M8 is durable, much more so than the Digilux 2 which is a paint finish though it does show finger marks. The black camera is also plated not anodised and I expect it will be similar to an M6 or M7. Â Least durable part of the camera for me is the display screen - I saw Popflash were offering a returned camera for resale and specifically mentioned a few scratches. I think a screen protector is a good idea. Â I agree the R-D1 finish is poor - the paint quickly wears and all you see is the grey casting underneath. There's patina and there's patina...
