Dear Bruno,

As far as I know, M3 simply does not have the frame for the focal distance shorter than 50 mm. The magnification of M3 is 0.95x, it is too large for short lenses?

Cheers,

Sang

Dear Sang,

forgot to mention that it's actually true the other way round. Namely, the lesser is the rangefinder magnification, the harder it becomes to properly focus longer lenses than 50mm.

That's to say that with an "a la carte" M camera fitted with a 0.58x you'll have pretty good real estate to work with a 28mm, but you can forget to focus a 90mm at f2 unless you put a magnifying lens on the viewfinder.

Cheers,

Bruno

I purchased my first Leica, an M8, two years ago, and I loved it.

I loved it so much, that I bought an M6. I loved it so much, I loved my M8 less.

I loved my M6 so much, I ordered an M3 and a iiif of eBay. Gus Lazarri of TLC Camera Repair performed CLA on these, and when I received them, I finally knew true love.

The M3 especially is silky smooth. The shutter sound is music to the ears, and advancing the film feels almost sensual.

I am amazed by the work of Mr. Lazarri, and even more amazed that a 60 year old camera can look and feel as new. Truly, the M3 was built without any compromise.

The camera I love the most will forever be the Pentax SPII I used as a boy (and still use today), but without a doubt: I love my M3.

I am a new member here, and I am expecting my M3, 50mm Summicron, and Leicameter MR back from Gus within 2 weeks. I am so excited I can't contain myself. I have a 3 day trip to New Orleans planned later this month and plan to "learn" my new M3 whilst street-shooting in New Orleans. I am glad to hear of other good experiences with Mr. Lazzari. It will be my first rangefinder experience. Can you offer any advice?

Regards,

Jeff

I got a simple stroke a couple months ago an it's great! Amazingly quiet (even compared to my M6ttl), the viewfinder magnification is great for the longer focal lengths that I regularly use (though I'm happy with the results taken with 35mm lenses too), the mechanics are smooth and perfect, and the rangefinder definitely deserves it's recognition as the best ever (even if I try I can't make it flare)...I'll be getting a 1,000,000+ serial number as soon as one comes up for a reasonable price.

In short, I to am in love.

Yeah, I love my M3, too!

Been shooting it professionally for documentaries for the last three years using only a 5cm Summarit 1.5 lens and I figure it will take me another 20 years to really get the most out of it.

Here's my latest documentary link:

out of interest as a newbie. what thread.. should i post my flickr link too.?

Keep at it - it's a fantastic combo (I know a few people, being jealous on the Zunow, myself included ;) ).

Regarding posting photos, this forum tends, to be less tolerant, regarding posting photos outside of very restrictive rules.

Apart from posting photos OF your cameras and lenses in diverse threads here in the discussion forums (the ones, that are frequented the most), most other photo postings are banned to the specific photo forums.

Make sure, you read the FAQ here on the forum regarding image sizes, or you might end up with moved/ edited threads.
