Advertisement Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 Hi IkarusJohn, Take a look here Name this car..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ivan Goriup Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19562 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 (edited) Not a Bristol, in fact, no British content at all as far as I know.......although on second thought, a connection did exist between the two manufacturers after this car was built.Ā JZG Edited April 22, 2023 by Ivan Goriup
a.j.z Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19563 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 Looks good interesting but I have not the faintest idea. So chassis and engine come from different manufacturers? US? Ā
wlaidlaw Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19564 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 Saoutchik Delage D8?Ā Wilson
Ivan Goriup Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19565 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 Andreas - engine & chassis were made under one roof by the manufacturer of the car, with the body built by a coach builder in a different, but newly allied country.Ā Wilson - not a Delage, no French content. Perhaps another view, this time of the lower half of the side / rear view will help. Hint - this is a race car built for endurance racing, with Ā victories in very famous races, driven by some famous names. JZG Welcome, dear visitor! Ivan Goriup Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19567 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Spot on, Wilson. It is indeed the one-off 1938 BMW 328 Touring Coupe ( the official designation ).Ā I remember my father talking about this car when I was a youth..... and then it simply disappeared for decades. A beautiful car, with a fascinating story behind its creation involving some legendary figures in motorsports. I don't have the time to go into the details, therefore posting a link to the story behind this car -Ā https://www.supercars.net/blog/1939-bmw-328-mille-miglia-coupe/Ā ........worth reading. Ivan Goriup Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19569 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 .....and one from the rear.Ā Incidentally, since posting the original crop of this car, I've done some more reading on the subject and learned that part of the reason BMW was so anxious to build, finish & test this machine, was that the Reich and Mussolini's Italy had concluded their infamous 'Axis treaty' not long before and to celebrate the occasion, announced that they were going to stage a race between Berlin and Rome. As it turned out, impetuous ol' Adolph jumped the gun and invaded Poland prior to the race, putting paid to all the grand plans. Alfa-Romeo, BMW with this model, Mercedes and others all had dedicated entries for the race which never took place. Here's a limk to the restoration of the Mercedes entry at their Classic facilities in Stuttgart a few years ago, which you are sure to enjoy watching ; https://www.classicandsportscar.com/video/rebuilding-the-mercedes-540k-streamliner JZG Ā Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted April 22, 2023 Share #19570 Ā Posted April 22, 2023 We have one of the 1939 Works Team Monte Carlo rally 328's, although it is currently up for sale. This was bought immediately after the 39 Monte Carlo by Lady Betty Haig, the niece of Field Marshal Douglas Haig. She was a well known racing and rally driver both before and after WW2. The original engine got blown up in we think 1946 or 47 and Bristol lent/gave her one of the prototypes of their version of the BMW 2 litre 6 cylinder hemi head pushrod engines, where they had received the design, as war reparations. It still has that same prototype Bristol engine fitted but because of its unique provenance, is regarded as a legal 328 by FIVA/FIA. Many 328's have had their engine "Bristolised" as the Bristol block, crank, rods and head are more robust than the originals.Ā Again would appreciate if someone can fill in for me by posting a photo.Ā Wilson 2
