Perhaps you should pull another one from your vast collection of interesting car photos.

No problem, happy to do it.

For this turn I'm reminded of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous quote that the rich indeed are different from you and me. Featured here are actually two very similar cars, same manufacturer, same coachbuilder, created for two slightly different purposes for a very wealthy client. Throughout their existence these two cars have always been together as a pair, owned by one person / collector. To me It is inconceivable that the pair will ever be broken up.....because that would completely miss the point of the whole extravagant exercise.

Shouldn't be too difficult. Make of car and approximate year of manufacture , please. Any additional informnation would earf bonus points.

Perhaps a little too esoteric.... again, so here's the rest of the story.

In 1934 Anthony Gustav de Rothschild, the youngest of the Rothschild family at the time, ordered a unique pair of Hispano - Suiza cars from Hispano - Suiza's London agent J.Smith & Co. Ltd. The carshown was intended for less formal occasions when Rothschild or his wife preferred to drive themselves on less formal occasions and designated the J 12 Coupe de Ville, started out with a V-12 engined J12  chassis, the most expensive available then. The car was completed in a very rapid six months by Carrosserie Fernandez et Darrin who were renowned for finishing their cars with absolute disregard for cost, concentrating on beauty, comfort and safety. Note the almost completely enclosed rear section for passenger privacy.

SL / 24-90 V.E.

The second car of the pair, the long wheelbase K6 chassis based six-cylinder car built by the same coachbuilding firm of Hernandez at Darrin and intended for more formal occasions, was finished in identical colors with complementary interior. Pease note the rake angle of the windshield, matching the car above.

It is reported that the pair cost in excess of US $50,000 ( remember, we're taliking '34 dollars ).

A view of both cars on the lawn of the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Not sure I'd call them beautiful, but certainly imposing.

Hello John,

Nice photos & interesting history.

$50,000 in 1934, in the USofA would probably buy what $5,000,000, more or less, would buy in the USofA today. 1932 was the worst year of the Depression. 1934 was not that far behind.

Best Regards,

Michael

The usuals, please.  As a hint, since it is a rarity, this is one of only two made, and was owned by a movie star.  Extra points if you identify the famous owner.

You're getting closer since it is a Ghia design, but not from Dual Motors.  The Dual Ghias were a favorite of the Rat Pack, with at least Peter Lawford (you can see his in the opening credits to the TV series The thin Man starring Lawford) and Frank Sinatra owning them, though Frank gave his to Ava Gardner.  Ronald Reagan had one, too, though the rumor is he lost it to LBJ in a card game - but that might not be true.

The puzzle car is older than the Dual Ghias.

Slightlly wider crop below without the Ghia logo cloned out.

Not that recent, and with a different partner for the mechanicals.  Here's a more generous crop.

That rather shouts Facel Vega but the only special body one I know is the hideous Excellence EX1, which looks like the back of a finned Cadillac welded onto the front of a Facel Vega but not very well (a Kenny Everett car - "All in the best possible taste.")
