I posted an orange Ginetta G15 a while back - post #15328 on page 767 - but the front indicators on that G15 are under the bumper. Here it is again; Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted November 30, 2022 Share #18822 Posted November 30, 2022 There was an Orange G15 around back in the days when I used to compete in hill climbs at Prescott in the Ralt-Judd F2 in the late 1980's - maybe the same one. Earlier when I did hill climbing in the 1960's, Peter Voight (our local violin repairer) used to drive a G15, before he changed to a tiny sports racing car (maybe a Viper, Vixen or something beginning with a V, based on an F4 single seater), also I think with an Imp derived mid engine. Wilson Oddly enough the first time I ever visited Le Mans was for the 24hr in 1984 when Bob Tullius had entered his brace of 'Group 44' Jaguar XJR-5s. This was at a time when the astonishing Porsche 956 was steamrollering all which came before it occupying, in the '84 event, the top seven places at the end. We were camping in the infield and on waking on the Sunday morning would hear the whistling of all the 1.5 litre turbo cars circulating which was broken only by the extraordinary bellowing of the naturally-aspirated six-litre V-12 Jaguars. Sadly neither saw the chequered flag but they certainly had 'Presence' in spades! I rattled-off a dozen or so rolls - 1/3 of them on the M2 - so will see if there is anything which might be of interest. Philip. Never mind being posted here; this wonderful creation deserves to be featured in Farnz' "Sculpture" thread! pippy Posted December 1, 2022 Share #18831 Posted December 1, 2022 Hmmm..... Still a bit elusive, eh chaps? Yes; I can see why. O.K. Here's another pair of clues. Firstly; this is the rear of the car. Although you might be forgiven for thinking the tail-light lenses are black in reality they are RED! It's just that the snaps were captured on a B'n'W camera. But the car IS finished in 'Olde Englishe Whitee'. so the body 'colour' as depicted here isn't too far out. Second clue? Look at the Badge!............but just to keep things a mystery I've retouched the model designation out. Cunning of me, huh?! To be honest before having had a good look at this example I'd never noticed this lovely little detail before. So much for my "Powers of Observation"............ Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted December 1, 2022 Share #18832 Posted December 1, 2022 The old English white was not a great choice for these cars, given their propensity to rust at the bottom of every panel and along ever seam (the earlier seams used canvas anti rattle interleaving rather than the polythene of later cars). The canvas acted like a wick attracting and retaining water. The old English white showed every spick of rust and the usual migrating staining as well. My 1960 3.8L XK150S coupé was originally OEW but when I had a back to bare metal respray, I opted for British Racing Green. Wilson

I sympathise with your pain, Wilson. When, as a youngster and with all the naiivety which that encompasses, I rebuilt - from a completely stripped-out rolling shell - my first car; a '59 rag-top Beetle. For the colour-scheme I decided on Two-Tone Lamp-Black over Ivory. Once finished the car looked GREAT for about six months until the UK winter, capitalising on the opportunity afforded by non-replaced rubber window-glass seals, lead to the inevitable appearance of door-skin 'Rust of Doom'...... The car pictured here might well have enjoyed a sheltered life as it lives just along the road from my 'family-in-law' in La Rochelle so may have been spared the worst of the Yuletide English Salted Roads but I suspect it has still been pampered. Lovely old thing! That digression aside; does anyone know the make / model of the 'Unknown Vehicle' as posted or should I post another clue?............ Thank you for giving us the correct answer and for taking up the challenge of posting the next task! Unfortunately (for me) the car was parked very close to both wall and gate so it was impossible to obtain satisfactory 'whole thing' photographs which could do true justice to the beauty of the car but, FWIW, here's the best I could manage; Welcome, dear visitor! NigelG Posted December 2, 2022 Share #18836 Posted December 2, 2022 Thanks Pippy for a lovely car which I was maybe familiar with before the “reveal” 🤔 Got to agree re Old English White…a good colour to show of the coachbuilt curves of an aluminium body but also a nightmare of maintenance and rustproofing. Interesting (on a side note) that Chris Evans repainted all of his collection (Ferrari Daytona et al) in this colour…
wlaidlaw Posted December 2, 2022 Share #18837 Posted December 2, 2022 I think those are the same or very similar headlights to those on my father's Mk.V Saloon. At that time, if you were going abroad, Lucas used to offer an exchange/loan service from their depots. I remember going to Aberdeen twice with my father in the Mk.V to have LHD headlights put in and again a few weeks later to have them changed back. I think they may also have put it yellow tinted bulbs to meet French regulations. A long way from today, when my car changes the headlights automatically, when I come out of the tunnel at Sangatte and the GPS detects I am in a driving on the right country. However, for the next 6 months, every time I power up the car up, I get a bleep and a message on the screen: "Headlight orientation altered" or some such message. Once would be enough for the message thanks. The system would have struggled in Italy before the war, where some regions/states were RHD and some LHD. If a town in a region owed its loyalty to someone else e.g Perugia in Umbria, which was anti-Papal although Umbria had been a Papal state, then Umbria would have driven on the Right but when one entered Perugia, the rule would change to drive on the left. As the Italians at the time and often nowadays in rural regions, drove in the middle of the road, it did not make much odds to them. The occupying American Army had so many accidents, that they declared the whole country "Drive on the Right" in 1944. If the principal occupying power had been Britain, would Italy now be driving on the left? Most pre-war Italian quality cars are RHD and Lancia remained so right up the mid 1950's. Rona!d Posted December 2, 2022 Share #18838 Posted December 2, 2022 As a student for a couple of years the XK 140 was the favourite classic car to buy. I had old Jaguar brochures where they looked great. I saw an english white XK 140 close to the highway on a parked truck trailer (US reimport cars). Fortunately ONLY in the evening when it was dark. Otherwise I´d got a rust or epoxy shock.
