Advertisement Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Hi stuny, Take a look here Name this car..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
NigelG Posted October 12, 2023 Share #20722 Posted October 12, 2023 (edited) I’ll try to dig something out - travelling today. Re the above on history of producing car bodies in Central London I seem to recall that although my 408 was assembled at the Bristol factory in Filton the body was actually hand-built in Acton, London where the bus bodies were produced. Not far from the original (only) service centre on Hogarth lane (now the A4) and the (only) showroom on Kensington High Street. Trying to recall if there are any other manufacturers of recent vintage who only had a single showroom/dealership - even an outfit like Morgan have 14 distributors Edited October 12, 2023 by NigelG
wlaidlaw Posted October 12, 2023 Share #20723 Posted October 12, 2023 Argyll Cars. As precisely none were sold, I would guess this was through (or not through) a single outlet. I am talking about the 1970-80s relaunch, not the earlier iteration up to the 1930s, which was quite a successful make, with a very impressive factory, now a grade 1 listed building. Indeed I was thinking about a long-running concern rather than a specialist/single model/short-lived enterprise and in the modern era - though I think it's obviously debatable whether Bristol Cars ever actually entered "the modern era"...😉 Edited October 12, 2023 by NigelG
wlaidlaw Posted October 12, 2023 Share #20725 Posted October 12, 2023 Well there was HMW cars which were only sold from the works premises (Hersham and Walton Motors). There is an excellent history of HWM book by Simon Taylor (2 volumes) but it is eye-wateringly expensive at £130. It is great that unlike many of the British 1950s motor racing garagistes, HWM is still going strong. Wilson

Wilson I assume the Simon Taylor of the “Stovebolt Specials” is also the owner of the splendid 1937 Bentley Sedanca coupé?

Amazing place and the older guy behind the counter was hypnotic, I asked for certain parts, he disappeared and then after a while reappeared with little packages of dark brown greaseproof paper. If the place still exists it must be a museum. 🍷

Nigel, Yes that is Simon's car. I believe that car had as built, a softer than standard camshaft, designed to make it more drivable/tractable in the congested Paris traffic of the 1930's. It only had around 100BHP rather than the 120 of the standard 4¼L Bentley. I don't know if that has been changed, I certainly would have changed it. The 4¼L Bentleys are perfectly drivable with the standard cam. My brother has a rather matronly looking 1937 Vanden Plas 4¼L Bentley cabriolet, not enlivened a lot by its sludge grey paintwork. Once I have sold my 1977 911 RSR, I intend to buy a 4¼L Bentley of 1937 to 39 vintage, as more suited to my advanced age but probably a sports saloon rather than a coupé, sedanca de ville or convertible, ideally in cream with chocolate accents or two tone green. If the place still exists it must be a museum. 🍷 It no longer exists but the ethos remains through the Bristol Owners Club who bought the entire spares inventory when the company folded, funded in part by members such as myself but also by a single large donor. When I needed parts to rebuild the water pump on my ‘65 408 in 2018 I was sent a “brown paper” parcel containing the requisite MOPAR (Chrysler) parts date stamped at some point in the early 70s 😀

NigelG Posted October 13, 2023 Share #20732 Posted October 13, 2023 (edited) Nope but I see why. My father had a gold (really a kind of “dark” gold) Vauxhall Victor with a bottle-green interior that’s giving similar vibes and was probably “informed” by this car. edit : I think it might be Gold Starfire !
