I was wondering about it being a Porsche 968 but I think there is too much room from the front of the headlamp bezel to the 'bumper' split-line on the 'Mystery' for it to be the Porsche. Must have a dig around...

Porsche is correct, but not a production car...

Ah! That will explain why I see them in their thousands all over the place and recognised it instantly...

Do we get anything else to go on other than a roughly-circular headlamp?

Perhaps a pre-production design study for the Boxster?

That's the one-off 1989 PORSCHE Panamericana Concept design, submitted by new styling dept. boss Harm Lagaay & Ulrich Bez. At the time Porsche was in financial trouble and was desperate to find a less expensive alternative to the ever more pricey 911 which at the time was still considered the main stay of the firm. This design study was an attempt to build a basic package which could be configured as a coupe, a roadster, an off-road sports car or an all-out race car utilizing the existing, basic 911 powertrain  / chassis with minimal changes between the varous versions.

Thank God it never came to that, and it remained a one-off destined for the museum.

Thank you, Andreas.

For the next mystery car I propose to try some thing a little different - a two-stage guessing game to arrive at the correct answer.

1. a pictorial hint or two to try to determine what car we're looking at, and then,

2. more clues to identify the specific model of the car.

Moderators, please feel free to delete this post if you feel I've exceeded the implied limits of individual freedom & unspoken rules of this thread, and throw it open to another posting by another member for the next puzzle car - I just think we need to do something new to reignite interest in this thread.

I don't think it'll be too difficult to solve part one, which I've made purposely easy, and wherein I'm looking for the usual info of car maker, year, and general model description...... if you can identify the specific 'sub-model' based on the first clue(s) - that perfectly fine.

I'm certain that's correct re: the Gulf Ford GT.  It's also not one of the cars that Gurney drove.  Likely to be the Mirage lightweight, and perhaps even the camera car from the movie Le Mans.  Perhaps the Ikcx & Thompson car.

I vainly tried to keep up with Adrian round the Nordschleife in our Porsche 904/6 GT. It just walked away from me down the straights. It was having to stop more than twice as often as we did for fuel and fuelling on the Old Timer GP is still by churns for some garages so a slow process and eventually it broke down, so tortoise and hare.

Quite the tour de force, Stuart. Not much I can add after that rather complete description. Yes, the 1968 Ford GT 40 P/1047 Mirage M # 10003 shown above.

To fill in a few of the highlights of this car's race history - At it's debut in the 1967 Spa 1000 KMs, Jacky  Icks & Dr. Dick Thompson drove this car to the first victory for one of the Gulf / Wyer cars in the legendary Gulf blue / oeange cars.

Finally, it is the car Steve McQueen used as the camera car for his LeMans film.

Well done, Stuart - you're up.
