Jesus! What a rig! Now I remember why I am an available light photographer.. Seriously, with all that stuff, why not just use a DSLR with autoflash everything. I don't know squat about flash, but there must be a point, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what it would be

So rather than use all this flash stuff with one's favorite camera, you think one should ONLY use the M8 without flash and then, when flash is needed or wanted one should switch to a huge plastic-lensed DSLR piece of junk because it "matches" the flash rig? Doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Thanks for all the useful info everyone!

Just to be fair to natural light I think I should post an available light picture with the same filter and CS3 RAW converter. This one was taken at lunch today with a window behind me as the light source. The whole setup was super light just the M8 with a 50mm Summicron. ISO 1250. Now we have a Metz, a studio strobe and a natural light sample of the same model in the same thread.

I have M8, Metz 54-4, Leica SF 24D.... Am I to understand that I could operate either of my flashes off camera by adding the Nikon SC-28 cord and that the proper module for mounting the metz to the M8 is SCA3502 M5?

Cindy--

Well, this time I know a bit more than the previous time I attempted an answer.

As late as mid-December, Metz had not added the M8 to their flash recommendations list (see thread http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/11442-metz-flash-m8.html).

But that has changed and the M8 is now shown on their website. SCA 3502 M5 is the correct module (website says module version "M4 or later").

And using either that combination or the SF 24D with the Nikon SC-28 will not damage your equipment.

No offense man but this is not about available light shooting. (And this is where I am about 99 % of the time). Point is that if you need or want to shoot flash, you basically have two choices............Shoot something like the SF 24D with the flash rig mounted directly to the hot shoe, with all the advantages and disadvantages of same or mount off shoe to control the direction of the flash. One can, and I also do, often just hold the flash in my left hand and control the direction of the light. Problem is that focusing is a real pain in the *$ss because you can only do so many things with one hand. The old Vivitar rig is not elegant but works surprisingly well when the point is to have the flash off camera. Just try it! If you don't need flash, cool but that is somewhat besides the point. IF you do need flash, please post an alternative to what has been prescribed.
