scanner Posted December 19, 2006 Share #1  Posted December 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) After working for one year with the DMR on the R 8 or R 9 I can say in all honesty that the combination is fabulous.  This year we have made a Christmas card ( "Merry Christmas and a safe and coulorfull 2007") with the DMR. Waiting one hour and then this dramatic sky ! DNG file, Photoshop elements and a little working afterwards on it.  We have made for a big hotel company shoots with the DMR---see http://www.fotorobvantwoudt.nl and then to the button "bastion". Really, I can recommend this combination and a year ago Guy said to me that I must not hesited and buy the DMR. I am very happy that I did it.  I have worked for 4 hours with the M 8 in Solms and also the M 8 is on my list to buy. The images are beautifull and i know of the problems with the IR but I think that with the approach by Leica the M8 will be a winner in the digital world.   Greetings, Rob. Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted December 19, 2006 Share #4 Â Posted December 19, 2006 Rob - Â Yes, it is a lovely image, and I agree with you about the DMR. We had just returned from India (November 2005), which was my first all-digital trip: D2 and Fz20, when Barbara gave me a DMR -- she had been trying to get one for two years. At first I was in an approach-avoidance complex, the avoidance being the size and weight of the kit compared to what I had just used in India, and with which I had gotten such good results. Now I wouldn't be without the DMR. Its performance is superb in every way, it handles so well, and it is so smooth.
scanner Posted December 19, 2006 Author Share #5 Â Posted December 19, 2006 Indeed the R 8 or R 9 and the DMR is a heavy business but because it is heavy it is very well to handle and I have discovered that the risk of shaking is not big, perhaps not big at all. I saw your site, beautifull ! You are working now a lot with the DMR, I understand. Ans yes, the DMR produce great images !! Congrat with all your beautifull pictures. macusque Posted December 20, 2006 Share #7 Â Posted December 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Rob, great image! Â My DMR (finally !) should be here today and I'm wondering what did you mean when you said you are still using 1.1 software that Guy sent you. Maybe you preferred to go back to 1.1 firmware ? Â I guess I'll receive the DMR with 1.2 firmware. Â Is there something in 1.1 which is missed or worse in 1.2 ? Â Thanks
scanner Posted December 20, 2006 Author Share #8 Â Posted December 20, 2006 Dear Macusque, Â Â 1.2 with my DMR didn't work quite well so Guy send me 10 months (??) ago 1.1. again. Al lot of users prefered 1.1. and when you see the download page from leica you will notice that 1.1. is back again for the DMR users who had troubles ( color on the screen for instance). Soon there will be 1.3 I hope. Â Greetings, Rob
scanner Posted December 20, 2006 Author Share #9 Â Posted December 20, 2006 Dear Macusque, when your DMR has 1.2. you can work first with that software. I don't know if the new DMR is ready (more ready) for 1.2. or that 1.2. isn't the right stuff. My friend James van Leuven is happy with 1.2 but a lot of forummers about 8 months ago were not very happy. So start to work with the software already placed on your DMR and then decide ! Â Greetings and happy season, Â Â Rob
macusque Posted December 20, 2006 Share #10 Â Posted December 20, 2006 Thanks Rob, Â I'll do what you suggest, trying with 1.2 first. Â Ciao

Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 20, 2006 Share #12  Posted December 20, 2006 Marco 1.2 had a LCD color issue of about 700 kelvin to warm and also the clipping for highlights was way to high if i remember itcorrectly. 1.1 is still on the leica site todownload . Many of us here tested 1.2 and reported more problems with it than send e-mails to leica and they put 1.1 back up and alsoissued a statement that still is on the download site   Leica Camera AG - Downloads
scanner Posted December 20, 2006 Author Share #13 Â Posted December 20, 2006 Dear Guy, now i am reading this post I think that 1.3 should be ready about may/june this year ? But I have heard nothing about a new version. I am still working with 1.1. but is it possible that a new DMR is working fine with 1.2.? In the meantime 1.1. is very good for me. Â Thanks Guy ! scanner Posted December 20, 2006 Author Share #14 Â Posted December 20, 2006 Guy, do you have information about the 1.3 for the DMR or is Leica to busy with the M 8 problems ? Thanks, Rob
scanner Posted December 21, 2006 Author Share #15 Â Posted December 21, 2006 The sensor from the DMR comes from Imagon, the sensor in the M 8 from Kodak. can this explain the troubles with the M 8 ? and the succes of the DMR ? Â greetings, Rob
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 21, 2006 Share #16 Â Posted December 21, 2006 Actually both sensors come Kodak and there basically the same . The DMR firmware came from Imacon and the M8 came from leica , Phase One and Jenoptik each did there part on electrical and firmware at least as i understand it. So the firmware sources are different overall . The troubles with the M8 come from a different design because the lens is so close to the sensor and they need to put in a weaker IR filter on the sensor to get the optimum performance if it was stronger i think don't quote me that you would see astigmatism and internal reflections ( ghost) on the sensor. So this was the design decision that needed to be made because of the short lens to sensor issue. The DMR firmware 1.3 i heard back at my M8 demo was December but not sure
scanner Posted December 21, 2006 Author Share #17 Â Posted December 21, 2006 Dear Guy, thanks ans I believe you for sure but I always thouggt that the DMR sensor was made bij Imacon. Imacon and Hasselblad are together ( see the newest hasselblads) so Leica and Imacon must say goodby. Â But I believe you when you say that both sensors were made by Kodak. Â When your believe about the troubles with the M 8 is right than the making of the M 8 was very difficult and at the top of the technical possibilities. So with the IR curt filters to avoid the magenta issue are we arrived what technical can be done. I have worked for a morning in Solms with the M 8 and he make superb pictures for my kind of work. There can be some sensors who have mistakes but with a good sensor and the IR cut fliters and the right software it must be a fantastic camera. Do you agree ? I wait for the 1.3 for the DMR but I can work very good with 1.1. Â greetings, Rob
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 21, 2006 Share #18 Â Posted December 21, 2006 Rob i really love the M8 because i can see what it is supposed to be and it is getting there but the basic file is awesome and extremely well detailed and sharp . We just need to see the issues solved and this will make many people happy. I think it helps coming from the DMR because we know what to expect also
scanner Posted December 21, 2006 Author Share #19 Â Posted December 21, 2006 The people by leica deserve it to have a great succes. They are so friendly everytime we go to Solms. We go to Solms for a check up of all equipment. All is well but all is checked. They love there work and believe me, they do all to help the buyers of the M 8. It will be solved, that's for sure.
