marknorton Posted December 17, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's something which has slipped under the wire unnoticed: Leica Camera AG - Extended customer service for LEICA DIGILUX 2 They are offering to replace the sensor in the D2 which they can say can fail after prolonged use. Worth doing to preserve the value of the camera but usual ambiguity - is this a general recall or are they just saying sensors will be replaced free of charge outside warranty. For how long? Advertisement Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Digilux 2 - Free of Charge Sensor Replacement. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thomasl.se Posted December 17, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2006 Mark, Riley brought this to to attention the other day, but should be worth a separate thread. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/11431-d2-lc1-failures.html#post119453 Much due to the loose ends of this commitment, I saved a screen dump lest they forget. For how long? my take on it is, they will fix them when and as they fail with the pressure they are under with M8, i dont think anymore could be asked of them
elgenper Posted December 18, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 18, 2006 Direct quote from the announcement: "... Specifically, this refers to exchanging the digital camera's sensor in the case of a rarely occurring malfunction...." Doesn´t sound like a general recall, does it? Also, they use the term "extended warranty". To file a warranty claim, one has to show an actual fault with the merchandise.
marknorton Posted December 18, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted December 18, 2006 Yes, it does sound like an extended warranty, not a general recall, sorry for mis-reading it, but good news for the people here who have reported sensor failure. Riley Posted December 18, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 18, 2006 in fact with what was innitially reported here as the LC1 recall when i recorded that on other forums, i was challenged as to the verasity of the word 'recall', as not all LC1 are so affected. i think that there has been a failure to record the incoming of faulty sensor stock adequately, and now they find themselves in a position where they cannot acurately say as to what camera is likely to fail. Leica then are a victim of imprecise stock handling by another agent. on the user side, we already know the anecdotal evidence of a 'rate of failures' but there is no doubt that this is more than a little unsettling, were knowing what cameras are or might be affected would be much preferred. if this turns out not to be true, i for one would greatly appreciate Leica intervening with an account of the facts of the matter, that relates to serial numbers. gennfiks Posted December 18, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 18, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sounds like Leica is responding correctly to the potential problem. WILL PANASONIC DO THE SAME? I mean would we, the poorer brothers of the D2, the LC1 owners, get the same WARANTY EXTENTION? In any case it will be Panasonic who changes and supplies the sensor to both their rich and poorer children. May be we, the LC1 owners, should pressure Panasonic to do the same for us? My LC1 still works fine, still under the warrant till march 2007, but you never know what could happen after? Thanks, Gennady
