Squid Jigging

These dorys were used to "jig" for fish in the Canadian Maritimes and U.S. New England fishing communities. This picture is from Grand Manan, a large island in the Bay of Fundy.

Mauro, Wlilfredo,

Many thanks for your kind comments.

This certainly is from a bygone era. Jigging as a commercial fishing technique is long gone - not profitable. It has been replaced by large boats and nets.

This type of fishing in small dorys was the basis of maritime fishing villages, and spawned a strong and unique culture. From the outports of Newfoundland there is a famous song "Squid Jiggin' Ground". The last of its 10 stanzas goes:

"Now if ever you feel inclined to go squiddin',

Leave your white shirts and collars behind in the town,

And if you get cranky without yer silk hanky

You'd better steer clear of the squid-jiggin' ground."

All part of Canada's maritime culture.
