semorg Posted December 16, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I received the 100/2.8 apo macro APO last night. It was shipped to US from Germany with express UPS. I eagerly opened the lens to take some test shots, and noticed a scratching sound when I turned the focusing ring from 1:2 to infinity. I thought it might be normal or it would go away so I turned the focusing to 1:2 and back to infinity a several times and noticed it left a thin scratch mark on the barrel in helical manner . It seems like there is something between the focusing ring (the metal part that has rubber cover on it) and the barrel that has the distant focus and magnification mark on it. Obviously you can imagine how disappointed I am, but more so I like to know what might be there problem and if anyone else here has had the same issue in the past. And lastly what is my course of action. The item was insured with UPS? will this be covered. If I send this to Germany for clean up, how much should I expect to pay? Any other though or suggestion is welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Canfred Posted December 16, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 16, 2006 Hi Salim , dissapointing this is I am sure but I would think the lens just needs cleaning. To me it sounds like a grain of sand became trapped. Best not to keep turning the focus ring it will do more damage.

How long would that take and how much would that cost? Best, Salim
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 16, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2006 Was the lens packed in it´s original package ? Was it a new item ? If s/h or new, in any case it´s an issue you can only solve with your dealer. If there is something within the lens, it should have been in there prior to shipping. With a new lens with a full warranty, you would be well off. In case it´s an eBay- lens the quarrel begins ... Good luck to you to solve the proplem. Canfred Posted December 16, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 16, 2006 Salim I just had a good look at my 100 apo . I think you should take it up with the seller. Its unlikely you have caused this if all you did is remove it from the parcel. There is a small gap behind the focus ring removal of the ring would require special tooling. Also I do not think it would be a shipping issue. I wonder if they will take back now...since it has caused some scratch mark on the barrel... It also seems very hard for sand or something. I tried placing a thin paper in the gap to see if I can free the dust but it's something very hard. Is there supose to be something there? dkCambridgeshire Posted December 17, 2006 Share #8 Posted December 17, 2006 Hi all..can you share you experience with sending your lens to germany for clean up. Price, timing and quality of work. Thanks. Your disappointment is understandable but maybe the fault is not quite as serious as it appears .. if it is a bit of grit it might be easy to remove ... it does not necessarily require returning to Leica ...or a complete lens clean ... consider trying a local repairer for an estimate e.g.: Welcome to Advance Camera They have Leica experience ... and give free estimates ... and any scratch is fairly easy to cover up using a Staedtler permanent black fine grade pen. As we say in UK ... " Don't panic Mr Mainwaring!!" Good luck Dunk

It's good to have a local repair shop... however, given the precision this lens has, I would not feel very comfortable giving it to anyone but leica germany salim
Guest adlerw Posted December 18, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 18, 2006 Hi Salim, sorry for your bad luck! But instead of asking other laymen - what about writing Leica an e-mail? The problem seems to be quite straightforward and hence a telediagnosis and cost estimate should well be possible. Regards, W.

The problem seems to be quite straightforward and hence a telediagnosis and cost estimate should well be possible. Regards, W. well...initially wanted to know if someone else had a similar problem with the 100 apo. Such as a loose screw or thread that got stock or something. Perhaps it might have been a comming issue with a quick fix. I also wanted to understand leica's reputation for cost and fixing this stuff and any other expereinced-base informtion that might have been helpful. But yes I am writing leica. Thanks, salim
