Maybe the original poster really wanted to know :

What type of tape doesn t damage the surface finish?

And holds up well in daily use?

Does he really want comments about whether taping is a worthwhile strategy?

As to benefits ...I have typed my M bodies for almost 40 years ..primarily to avoid rub marks . Originally used the 3M electrical tape without problem and now black textured gaffer tape I got a Photo Village in NYC. I now prefer a nice Luigi case but still tape a few small wear points before a few weeks of travel.

The OP's title of this thread is "Which kind of tape to go stealth?" and not which tape is best to avoid marks. But I like your information on what tape to use to avoid marks. I agree that tape can be very good a keeping the surface clean over long periods.

OK, the discussion above is about using a tape to decrease visibility of a camera. I have another question: is there any sense to tape parts of camera for better dust/weather sealing when going to rough environments? For instance, the edge of the top plate, the edges of the screen plate?

Tom.

if anyone has done enough dissection to evaluate whether there is a conceivable advantage to this (taping the seam of the top plate-body, or possibly the lcd, though i assume that's stuck on and already sealed) and possibly the metal frame around the rear lcd/controls, i'd love to hear more information.

i use my camera in the rain, already have used waterproof gaffers tape on some of those seals and on the shutter release (covering the remote screw-in release).

seriously, does someone really need ask on a forum what tape to use? cause if you do, tape is the least of your problems.

My thoughts exactly.

That said the posters who recommend electrical tape have obviously not shot in warm/humid enviroments or for long periods of time where it becomes a gooey mess. 3M photo tape works best.

Thats a pretty nasty comment IMHO. If you aren t interested in the post why comment at all?

When you go to sell an M body ..condition is important . It used to be common to put a piece of tape under the lugs to avoid rub marks for example. If you want to use tape to cover the camera identification ,you probably want to make sure you don t damage the finish.

If you are considering putting any tape on your camera(for any reason) ..you probably want to know two things:

1. Will the tape itself leave any marks? We have reports that taping over the white letters can result in losing the paint .

2. How will the tape hold up? Does it become a mess over time. Does it peel off easily ?

How is this any different than a screen protector? I hope to learn as others try different approaches even if they aren t that important to my situation.

To imply that there must be something wrong with the OP is out of line.
