wda Posted December 15, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) As several threads have touched on film scanners, may I ask if anyone has encountered focusing problems with a Nikon 35mm Coolscan? My 5000D has suddenly shown erratic focusing for no apparent reason. I tried resetting default settings, changed film carriers, switched on and off without success. I rang Nikon in London for insight but was left waiting for a more knowledgeable technician to ring me back. I am still waiting! Surely one of our Forum members can help. Any thoughts would be most welcome. David

woodda Posted December 15, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 15, 2006 I have always had a problem with my Nikon Coolscan 4000ED. Nikon denie the problem when I called but I know the depth of field has been noted in may reviews as very small. The ony way I cope with it is to use Silverfast Scanning software which has a great focus tool which gives a large section of image to compare pre and post. I have to manually focus every slide. What a pain Regards
ChrisC Posted December 16, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 16, 2006 David - Oh boy, Nikon UK and a scanning issue being raised in the M8 trauma wing is like the bad dream recipe before Christmas. I am sorry you are having 5000 problems, and whilst I cannot solve your problem maybe I can redirect you to a better place. For owners of Nikon 9000 scanners the place to go for help and knowledge is the Yahoo 8000/9000 user group, not Nikon UK who could drive one crazy rather like, well; Leica. I am pretty sure there is a Yahoo Nikon 5000 user group. and if they are anythingl like the 9000 group you will be as well looked after as if you had an M8 in this Forum. Good luck sorting out your scanner issues ..........................Chris

The Yahoo site didn't come up when I Googled. I will try it as you suggest. Fortunately I do also have a 9000 which is busy scanning legacy medium format material. When free, it would also scan Leica frames. However, the 5000 has suddenly started to behave itself after a bout of sulking only cured by going back to basics and defaulting. Fingers crossed!
