neelin Posted December 14, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't think the 30% deal works for me. I got a definitive answer from my dealer in Canada. 30% off list to max. $1200. All prices quoted by my dealer are US$. A 50mm f1.0 is US$4,600 less (max) $1,200. equals US$3,400. converted at todays rate, 1.159. CAN$3,940. Harry's Pro Shop in Toronto is selling the lens for CAN$3,895. Am I missing something here? The personal gesture from the CEO of Leica is kinda not the one I was expecting. Anyways, despite the specific weakness' of the M8, I'm loving the rest of it, and my new magenta running gear. mr_big Posted December 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 14, 2006 That's why I chose to ignore the 30% deal and instead bought a lens directly from Tony Rose.
marknorton Posted December 14, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 14, 2006 Not sure where you get the $4600 USD from. The price of the Nocti is currently €3350 including German VAT, take that off and you have €2888. Convert that to USD: $3800, take off $1200 and you arrive at $2600 or CAN$3015. But, you'll need to add the unfavourable rate from credit cards, any card handling fee, shipping plus anything your customs will add in the way of import duty and sales tax. sdai Posted December 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 14, 2006 Mark, I think he was quoted the inflated price being effective from Jan. 1 in US and Canada ... as I've posted in another thread, the inflated price of the WATE could shoot through 5000 dollars ... minus 1200 US max it's still 3800US - which is only 95 bucks off its current list price in the US! I don't know where your dealer is getting the $4600, but you might want to check with someone else. Try B&H Photo. Are these prices supposedly what Leica will charge direct from the factory? marknorton Posted December 14, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 14, 2006 Simon, I still think the tax is in there somewhere. Assuming the $4600 is net of sales tax, that translates back to a German price using current exchange rates of €3496. The current German price net of sales tax is €2888, so that would be one heck of a price rise, more than 20%. That said, they have hiked the price of the 24mm from €2450 to €2990 in 9 months, a 22% rise. Eye-watering...

marknorton Posted December 14, 2006 Share #8 Posted December 14, 2006 Tell me, what sort of reputation does "Best Buy Co., Inc" enjoy in the US? Is it like Wal-Mart?

I pre-paid for my M8 just to get in on the discount and if I find I could have just bought a lens from a dealer here for less than the promotion price, I will be officially pissed off. fotografr Posted December 14, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 14, 2006 Tell me, what sort of reputation does "Best Buy Co., Inc" enjoy in the US? Is it like Wal-Mart? Nowhere near Wal-Mart size. More like Wal-Mart's pet hampster. Trustworthy, but certainly not the best prices. What are you looking for?
marknorton Posted December 14, 2006 Share #11 Posted December 14, 2006 It's just that Steven K Lee (never understood this pre-occupation with middle-initials in the US) came from Best Buy to become CEO of Leica via a couple of months in some planning role. Maybe it was he who killed of the purchase of Sinar but the management style he brought to Leica from Best Buy I daresay is causing some chill winds around the corridors of Solms. Brash US manager meets ultra-conservative German workforce....
sdai Posted December 14, 2006 Share #12 Posted December 14, 2006 Mark, this would give you a good picture on what type of company Best Buy is. Smashing The Clock
