Hi.

Thought I would start this discussion as I have not seen it here yet. Hope I am not being redundant in bringing this issue up. I work with a P45 back and C1 Pro. When my previous back was delivered (P20) it arrived with a piece of white plexi glass. I asked what it was for and my dealer explained that it was for correcting and calibrating lens cast. At this point he went through a technical explanation as to why this was necessary when shooting digital with wide angle lenses. I am still waiting for my M8 to arrive, so I can not test this myself with the M8 - but it does work perfectly with my Hasselblad wide angle lenses.

C1 Pro has a tool that lets you easily save and apply a corrective layer to your raw files. You simply shoot through a piece of white plexi towards a even light source getting an espouser that places the histogram in the middle of the chart. Do a custom white balance in the middle of the image and you end up with a file that has the relative color shift recorded from a neutral center.

The icon for the tool is located on the white balance page - looks like a TV with a rainbow and arrows pointing up and down. Once you have made all the adjustments, you click on the tool and it lets you save the adjustment layer which you can later apply to another file. The saved layer will appear in the Lens CC drop down menu on the White balance page of C1 Pro.

Obviously this only applies to RAW files, but it should remove any color shift issue that the firmware can not deal with.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention, you have to hold the plexi right up to the lens. Also, the piece that I have is matt on one side - no reflections between the glass and plexi that way.

Thought this might be useful for the use of non-Leica WA lenses - don't need the coding this way.

Hi Bob,

I work on a Mac and the version of C1 Pro is 3.7.5.

This feature has been present on C1 Pro since I started using it 2 yrs ago, I have not downloaded 3.7.6 yet, but would assume that it would still be there. Since there is no way of lens data being transferred to the back with manual camera's such as the V series Hasselblads, they needed to allow for lens calibration to be manually applied at the processing stage. I have a feeling this would remove any cyan problem working with non coded lenses.

Thought I would attach some samples of what this can do. These files are EXTREME versions of a color cast and are here for demonstration purposes only. I think they show quite effectivly what the software can do to correct a color shift problem.

I'm using 3.7.6 mac version and I can't find it, if I read the help file it shows the section regarding this but when I look in the WB tab it's not there.

Yes, it's interesting ... the help file for my C1 Pro (Mac version 3.76) shows a "Lens cast calibration" popup that is NOT in the WB page as it is in the help file.

This makes me wonder if only the C1 Pro copies that Phase One sells with their professional backs has this feature enabled ... That's a shame!!!

That's why I asked which version since I can't find it on any PC version of C1. Does anyone know if the option appears if you have a camera other than a Phase One back attached to the computer. You would think it would be available when processing a RAW file from disk and not a tethered capture, perhaps not?

Bob.

I just opened a support case online with Phase One asking this question ... I'll bet they'll say this is only for users of their digital backs ... but I'll report back when they reply ...

This is really important, I think, because having this option in the C1 software would allow users of say the CV 12 to put a B+W 486 IR/UV cut filter in front (with a kludged 77mm holder, for example) and deal with the extreme "cyan shift" likely to result.

This would allow customers to make their own corrections for the cyan shift independent of the Leica corrections ... important for lenses for which there is no close optical Leica equivalent ....

Wow ... I hope that Phase One could be convinced to "turn on" this feature - but I'll bet it's a selling point for their digital backs, and they probably wouldn't be so generous ...

Hi.

So, I just downloaded 3.7.6 and the option is there. It is the in the white balance page of C1 Pro - the little cd looking icon third from the left. The "save lens cast" icon is the third from the left - next to the little camera and "target" icon. Underneath you have Balance - ICC profile and Lens CC. My camera is NOT connnected to the computer and these options are there even if the ICC profile is set to M8 Generic.

Hope this helps. Not sure if they have different versions of C1 Pro - Don't think they do. My assistants use C1 Pro and they don't have Phase backs and have never commented on this option not being there on their software - and they are keen on this kind of information - most of the digital info I work with - they taught me.

This must be a Mac-only thing. Which is a shame :)

...

Jamie,

I agree that it would be a shame if it was only a Mac thing. However, I have Mac C1 Pro version 3.7.6, and it is properly paid-for and registered, and I do NOT have the lens cast correction feature as seen in the screen shots that Per so kindly posted.

This feature is totally missing - leading to the suspicion that I voiced earlier that this exists enabled only in C1 Pro versions shipped with Phase One digital backs.

PS - We'll see what Phase One support says about the matter ...
