Anyone outside Italy used NewOldCameras in Milan?

I'm trying to order a lens from NewOldCameras in Milan, but in order to register on their site, it appears one needs a 'Cod. fiscale / P.IVA' - which I assume is a VAT registration number?

I've asked them how to order in an email, but the site seems rather arcane and difficult to use. Just wondering how to buy from them, if they only sell within Italy?

You're right, that's a VAT registration number they're asking for.

I can't help you otherwise. I have done lots of business with them over the years but I live in Italy. You will have to hear from them whether they ship outside Italy.

For what it's worth, I've been very satisfied with their service, both buying and selling.

You might want to call them. Ask for Watanabe

Thanks Marco

They do indeed have some lovely equipment, and I've heard nothing but good things about them - therefore my disappointment when trying to order online.

Guess I'll just have to plan a visit... ;)

This is just a guess, I do not know the specifics of the company at hand.

Normally in the EU, of which Italy is a part, you pay the TVA applicable in the country in which the sale takes place. I live in Germany, where the regular TVA is 19%, but if I buy something on mail order from another EU country, then I pay the TVA of the seller's country. This may be a higher percentage than 19%, or a lower percentage.

I am a consumer and I pay TVA (except if I buy from a private person). I pay it to the seller if he has a commercial business (and he hopefully pays the tax to the state later). That's the end of the story for me. However, if I were a merchant, then, when paying the TVA I have collected from my customers to the state, I could deduct the TVA on the purchases I made. This is simple too. Except if I had paid foreign (EU) TVA. Then the deduction mechanism gets difficult.

Therefore a system exists to avoid paying TVA on commercial intra-EU transactions. For this purpose you need to submit your VAT registration number to the seller.

If you are a private buyer, or a non EU resident, then the EU seller will not need our VAT number - and you don't have one anyway. If your shipping address is outside the EU, then make sure you do not pay TVA.

Well I received an email from Luca di Noc explaining the process, and I've replied to reserve the lens I'm hoping to buy.

Now we'll see how the transaction goes - I'm sure there'll be no problems, as I've heard nothing but the highest recommendation of this company.

Thank you all for the advice and help.

Oh - and forgot to add - thank you Maurizio for the offer of help! Maybe you could bargain the price down a little for me... ;)

NewoldCamera in Milano is a great shop. I visited them a few times and bought some things there. Since I live in the netherlands my situation is different, VAT-wise probably. I once ordered a special Summilux 35 mm and I planned to visit the Milan area anyway, so I paid it first and picked up the lens a months or so later. Email replies may take a day or two but I always get replies when I mail them.

Good luck.

Just a follow-up to further endorse the amazingly good response from NewOldCameras: not only have we now exchanged a number of (very promptly answered) mails on the lens in question, they've also sent it to service to remove some internal dust, and promised to report back on its condition when it returns, so that I can be sure of exactly the condition it's in before I transfer any money.

Great service from NewOldCameras - I totally retract the misplaced grumpiness in my first post.

This is in stark contrast to one of the London stores to whom I've now sent three messages about a lens and received no response whatsoever. Obviously no recession there...

Hi

Like to echo the many positive comments about Newoldcamera. Just got my Noct from them and the whole process was very smooth despite the immense distance between us(I am based in Singapore)

I was there no more than 1 month ago (I live not too far) and Watanabe was very proud of his multi-year-long deal with Noctiluxes... ;)... he bougth them for years, putting ensemble 30 or so... waiting with patience... and now enjoys the flow of orders from everywhere...
