macusque Posted December 12, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 12, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) My dealer just told me that the 30% discount over a new lens is real but you will receive the lens directly from Leica AG. This is not very kind from Leica, as they skip the official importers and dealers, hence saving probably more than the 30% discount and negating to them the sell of a lens... And what if I won't like the lens ? My dealer takes care of any issue with my gear, now if I have to deal directly with mother Leica I don't know how it would go. My dealer trade in my used gear, but clearly if I don't buy from him I won't receive the same treatment. Also, I don't understand how the issues with the camera relates to the buy of a new lens... again this is not kind for old Leica aficionados who don't need any new lens. Not that I don't appreciate the gesture, but I would prefer a simple discount on the M8, or maybe free IR filters + free coding for at least all your wide lenses, not just a couple of IR filters and no coding if you don't buy a new lens. I now use a "fixed" M8 (not sent back, but a new one) with the latest firmware 1.09, but the issues still remains as far as IR and camera profile. I love the image quality from the camera and I have zero problems in dealing with IR filters, 6bit coding and firmware updates. But these remedies should be handled by Leica at their expenses and rather quickly. Instead, we still don't have a correct camera profile, IR filters will be available in February 2007, in the meantime we have difficulties to get B+W IR filters at our expenses, 6bit coding is at our expenses (bayonet painting aside...) and for this we will receive a 30% discount if we actually spend more money on a new lens, and not from our dealers (who could also trade in some stuff and deal with possible issues). Ok, life is actually less tragic than my words suggest, but I do think Leica goofed a bit with the M8 marketing. Cheers

grober Posted December 12, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 12, 2006 Anyone in the USA actually received a letter (or e-mail) from Leica Germany yet? My dealer is saying the same thing but no one I know has yet received any direct communication from Leica Germany. Anyone? (My M8 left the USA for Germany last Friday according to Leica USA personnel in New Jersey.) -g

sarkleshark Posted December 12, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 12, 2006 I wonder if this will be 30% off AFTER the expected price increases in January?
pascal_meheut Posted December 12, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 12, 2006 According to the french magazine Chasseur d'Image, we should receive the 30% offer with the filters we ordered.
fotografr Posted December 12, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 12, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not that I don't appreciate the gesture, but I would prefer a simple discount on the M8, or maybe free IR filters + free coding for at least all your wide lenses, not just a couple of IR filters and no coding if you don't buy a new lens. When you buy a new lens now, the purchase entitles you to get free digital coding on two of your existing lenses. I would assume offer this would extend to the purchase directly from Leica with the 30% discount. So, this helps a bit more, particularly since most of us don't have more than a couple of M lenses wider than 24mm.
terrycioni Posted December 12, 2006 Share #8 Posted December 12, 2006 My dealer just told me that the 30% discount over a new lens is real but you will receive the lens directly from Leica AG. My understanding is the 30% offer is for those of us - who foolishly bought the M8 when they came out and now have to ship them back to Solms via NJ. This is somehow suppose to be a "we are sorry for inconvience and if your were stupid enough to be an early adopter" we will reward you with 30% off a lens up to a maximum of $1200. Not bad for Leica if you ask me - they will still make money off the backs of the early adopters, take our M8s away for up to 4 weeks and expect that we all should be happy campers. They are right of course no one is really complaining about giving up their M8 for 20+ days and just excepting this as the cost of being an early adopter which proves the brand has totally loyal customers. Like Tony Rose they should have replaced early M8s - no if ands or buts about it. What surprises me is that no one is holding Leica AG to account for this behavior other then a bit of whinning on the part of a few us. Cheers. Terry. True, but you'll also get 30% off if you pay for your factory fixed version before Dec 31st. I'm guessing that's compensation for the fact that the AWB is still not fixed in 1.0.9 and you'll have to wait till Feb 07 for the filters. On another note, when I got my Cut/IR from a German dealer they were kind enough to send me the M system brochure and the "offical" leica price booklet. Reading through the MRSP it seems most dealers seem to be selling lenses 10% less than list.
