stunsworth Posted December 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I realise that having advertisments help finance the site, but they're now taking up three sides of the screen. More to the point I've just noticed an Amazon ad for a Decca CD of Mahler. Why Mahler, why CDs?
Advertisement Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here The ads are increasing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted December 11, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 11, 2006 The "business end" is certainly getting very squashed on a small screen...
jmr Posted December 12, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 12, 2006 The Amazon ads on the right of the screen seem delightfully random at times - but unfortunately they seem only to point to .com with no option of .co.uk as far as I can see. I don't find them too intrusive, as they only appear on the top level screen not the International menu or anything lower down the hierarchy. LUF Admin Posted December 12, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 12, 2006 The random factor is really funny sometimes. Which products are shown depends on the content of our start page and on what Amazon thinks might fit to that. Which Amazon store is shown depends on your chosen language, in the left book recommendation box (which is really my recommendation) I can offer both shops. elansprint72 Posted December 30, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2006 Strangely the only advert I ever see is the right half of the banner at the top. Looks like, for once, I have managed to set up my computer correctly. Cheers, Pete.
brunom Posted January 21, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 21, 2007 It seems that most of the adverts are from American companies - does that mean that this websites will have to reflect their values ? Just a thought ! Bruno
robsteve Posted January 22, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Steve: I had seen this post a while back and wondered what it was all about, as I only saw a banner ad on the top of the screen. It seems my bookmark skips the main page with all the ads and just goes directly to the international forum. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/international-user-forum/
stunsworth Posted January 22, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted January 22, 2007 Robert, thanks - that's as free here too.
andybarton Posted January 22, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 22, 2007 If you link directly to the International Forum, not only will you miss all the shopping opportunities, you will miss Barnack's Bar as well.
NickR Posted January 22, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 22, 2007 I believe the amazon ads must be keyed off of our registration name. I continuously see ads for a type of camera I never mention here but frequently search for on amazon.
jmr Posted January 22, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 22, 2007 Nick, if you clear your Amazon cookie you'll enjoy the generic ads

gravastar Posted January 22, 2007 Share #13 Posted January 22, 2007 I'm using IE7 with XP and find the ads are causing a real problem. The page is locked until all the ads have been downloaded. Sometimes that's 10 seconds or more. I have broadband, the rest of the page loads very quickly - so the problem appears to be the response time of the ad servers. I now use the international forum to avoid this. Bob.
doubice Posted January 23, 2007 Share #14 Posted January 23, 2007 I'm using IE7 with XP and find the ads are causing a real problem. Bob. Bob, My wife mistakenly 'downgraded' to IE7 and I just about flipped when I found out. Uninstall it and use IE6; there are too many issues with IE7. LUF Admin Posted January 23, 2007 Share #15 Posted January 23, 2007 There seem to be some problems with the IE 7. I'm afraid I have to install it in order to fix it. Damn... Regards Andreas

IE 7 can not be the reason. Mine works fine with this forum and everywhere else.
gravastar Posted January 23, 2007 Share #17 Posted January 23, 2007 Wait!IE 7 can not be the reason. Mine works fine with this forum and everywhere else. Today pages with the ads load very fast with IE7. I've tried switching to several different "transparent" (they're not ) caches my ISP uses to see if that make a difference. There could still be a problem with IE7 if the ads load slowly though, at the moment with the loading so fast it's difficult to tell. Bob.
