audidudi Posted December 10, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm new to this forum and digital cameras, but I'm not new to photography or shooting with film and scanning, so please bear with me if some of my questions below seem silly and stupid! Here's the deal: I have a Hawaiian vacation scheduled next February and am unable to generate much enthusiasm for dragging an 8x10 view camera along (or even a 4x5, for that matter), so I've recently started looking for a small-ish digital camera that I can take with me instead. My primary subject matter over the past decade has been landscape and architecture, with some "urban abstracts" mixed in, but following the acquisition of a more suitable camera, I'm hoping to try my hand at "street photography" as well. So far, I've lined up a Panasonic LC-1 and L1 to evaluate, and am wondering if should also try to scrounge up an Epson R-D1 since I'll likely upgrade to an M8 if I find I enjoy non-view camera photography and won't have to buy new lenses at the same time. Are there any other alternatives I should also consider? Any input or advice will be greatly appreciated!
Advertisement Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Hi audidudi, Take a look here In addition to the LC1 and L1, should I also try an Epson R-D1?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest magyarman Posted December 10, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 10, 2006 Why do you go up one extremity to another one? After big film I think you will be big big dissapoint from small numerical. Mabe good I think you also look to 5D Canon because biggest sizable of sensor in also small sizable of box.
thpeters Posted December 10, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 10, 2006 Hi, Go for the L1 with a great Leica lens or if you want a good investment buy the M8 See the great examples in this forum from the Yosemite trip. Theo Peters
audidudi Posted December 10, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted December 10, 2006 After big film I think you will be big big dissapoint from small numerical. You're correct, of course, but aside from Joel Sternfeld, I don't think anybody else is foolish enough to do street photography using an 8x10, so some sort of compromise is necessary and the LC1, L1, and R-D1 seem to be as good as any for this purpose. I'm not really after another SLR -- BTDT with 35mm for two decades before I moved on to using view cameras -- so it remains to be seen how well I fit with the L1 and if you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears! sean_reid Posted December 10, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 10, 2006 By all means consider the R-D1 as well. Cheers, Sean
Riley Posted December 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 11, 2006 i would think that RD1 would trump LC1 or L1 pretty easily for your subject material so perhaps you should check it out
