gib_robinson Posted April 3, 2010 Share #44 Posted April 3, 2010 Must one still remove the bottom plate to change the battery or SD? Bottom doors like the Luigi M-Mate 2 would be nice. I haven't seen the final product, but it's hard to imagine how they could include the tripod connector along the bottom of the plate AND include openings for the battery and card. --Gib

kennedda Posted April 3, 2010 Share #46 Posted April 3, 2010 For those who want a better tripod solution, Really Right stuff has announced plans for its l-plate. The following is from their email to people who have written in on this: "Due to popular demand, Really Right Stuff is creating a custom plate for the Leica M8 and M9 cameras. This new Leica plate will be unlike any other ever made. The passionate voices of our Leica shooters dictated a fresh approach to the design of this plate. Instead of a standard L-plate that mounts to the camera's tripod socket, our plate actually completely replaces the Leica base. This replacement base will have an integrated dovetail for mounting in a Really Right Stuff clamp. Use the base alone as a conventional plate, or add an optional vertical component to create the L-plate. This vertical component will screw precisely to the base using our standard hex key. Excited about this design, but still want to use a grip? No problem. Add the optional grip; the grip will screw to the other side of the base." kennedda Posted April 3, 2010 Share #49 Posted April 3, 2010 Yes, this is the response from Really Right stuff which to me seems really appealling. I use Really Right Stuff L-bracket on my Nikon D300 and it works well. But, we will have to see the price of the new L-bracket for the M8/M9 and how it works. jplomley Posted April 3, 2010 Share #50 Posted April 3, 2010 I haven't seen the final product, but it's hard to imagine how they could include the tripod connector along the bottom of the plate AND include openings for the battery and card. The Mamiya 7II L-plate from Kirk has four cut-outs on the bottom plate to accompany film changing, dark cloth control, and battery changing. Its not all that difficult with modern machining practices.
hoppyman Posted April 3, 2010 Share #51 Posted April 3, 2010 Thanks to Gib pointing this development out to me, I went back to the RRS website and I've found that there is a specific newsletter for the M9 L Plate. You can subscribe. Perhaps we will see some more detail emerge on this new design before the actual product availability. Kudos to RRS for this development. Stand in line to get one for any occasion when you want to extract the very best from your Leica glass and M8/9 sensor.

Paul986 Posted April 6, 2010 Author Share #53 Posted April 6, 2010 Hi everyone Well we've done it! RRS have today confirmed that they are making a custom L bracket for our M8 and M9 cameras, which will be quite unique. Thank you for your support and emails to RRS in response to my original thread started some months ago. I can't wait to get mine. I'll leave you with the advice below. Regards Paul .................................................................................................................................. "Ok, we’re really doing it! The plates should be ready to ship by end of May. The item is not yet available for pre-order because I don’t have final pricing. Here is what we’re making: 1 – Base plate with integrated dovetail that replaces the base on the M8 & M9. This base will be a conventional quick-release plate for mounting in landscape mode. 2 – Optional vertical component that turns the conventional base plate into an L-plate. The vertical component will screw securely to the base plate. 3 – Optional grip. This will screw securely to the other side of the base plate. We’re really excited about this new product, Paul. I don’t anticipate selling hundreds of these plates, but everything you and your passionate Leica buddies can do to spread the word is appreciated! Interested shooters should sign up for our custom “Leica L-plate” email list. We’ll announce progress and pricing there. The easiest way to sign up is go to our storefront: Really Right Stuff - Newer Items If folks are already receiving our monthly eNewsletter, they should submit their email address anyway and update their profile to add the new Leica L-plate email list. carla geyer Really Right Stuff, LLC
Paul986 Posted April 6, 2010 Author Share #54 Posted April 6, 2010 Hi guys See my new post also but yes I got advice today from RRS confirming our new L bracket is to be available late May 2010. Email reproduced below... Paul ................................................................................................................................. "Hi Paul, Ok, we’re really doing it! We’re making an L-plate for the M8/M9. To keep folks informed on the progress of this new project, I created a custom email list for all the folks who responded to your post asking for an L-plate. I did send out an email to that small list today. The plates should be ready to ship by end of May. I would greatly appreciate it if you could announce this new product on your Leica forum. The item is not yet available for pre-order because I don’t have final pricing. Here is what we’re making: 1 – Base plate with integrated dovetail that replaces the base on the M8 & M9. thrice Posted April 6, 2010 Share #55 Posted April 6, 2010 Paul, I don't think you need to create two threads on the topic, your previous one is still relatively active. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/113097-custom-l-bracket-m9.html
d2mini Posted May 12, 2010 Share #56 Posted May 12, 2010 Anyone hear any more on this? The new L-plates were supposed to be released this month.
downstairs Posted May 13, 2010 Share #57 Posted May 13, 2010 As a prod at RRS to get it finished: The new Arca-Swiss L-plate is a lightweight step in the right direction. The lens axis adjusts OK, but there is still no fore & aft adjustment for nodal point. Quite a few of us do interiors and landscape with 2 or 3 stitched verticals - nothing excessive like QTVR - but somehow the trade is not with it yet. gib_robinson Posted May 14, 2010 Share #58 Posted May 14, 2010 My M8 has been used as the model for the RRS L-plate and it is scheduled to be returned to me by RRS next Tuesday WITH a new plate plus a grip modeled on the Leica grip. The grip is removable as is the vertical part of the L plate. So the product has been completed and they are making final adjustments. I would expect RRS will begin taking orders very soon. For all I know, they may be willing to take your order now. --Gib
