In fact any Leica digital other than the Digilux 2 Â We are still waiting for Apple to update the OS to allow the reading of Leica DNG files. There was a rumour that this may happen before Christmas, and this could still happen, but it might be worthwhile for every Mac user who wishes to use Aperture, to leave some feedback so that Apple can gauge the numbers of people involved. Â The feedback page is here. Â Apple - Aperture - Feedback
Advertisement Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Aperture and DMR/M8 RAW files. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jonoslack Posted December 8, 2006 Share #2 Â Posted December 8, 2006 Great idea Andy I've just been sulking about it and fiddling around with Aperture. Most irritating! Â I've been and said my piece
msr Posted December 8, 2006 Share #3  Posted December 8, 2006 I second Andy's idea.  I have been working with the Aperture demo and find it to be a very useful tool.  I have reworking several of my film based images with it: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/people/11094-fred-cat.html  Support for the M8 will be the deciding factor as to whether I purchase it or not. Eoin Posted December 8, 2006 Share #4 Â Posted December 8, 2006 I used Aperture to process, print and manage all my Canon raws, It's just sitting there now waiting for the DNG and Leica support to be added. I love using it and it does (did) 99% of my workflow stuff. Waiting, waiting, waiting.
DTD Posted December 8, 2006 Share #5 Â Posted December 8, 2006 I've just submitted some feedback. Aperture is a brilliant bit of software, but completely useless if your camera's not supported. I can't believe supporting all dSLRs isn't a priority for them. If Lightroom supports a camera and Aperture doesn't Adobe have got you hooked. robertwright Posted December 8, 2006 Share #6 Â Posted December 8, 2006 There may be some benefit in the delay, by the time raw support for leica dng files comes around they might have a better profile taking into account the Ir filter. Â I emailed the aperture feedback and asked for profile support like there is in capture one. There really should be a way to select custom profiles for cameras in Aperture but so far it is not available. You can tweak their conversions and save that, but it is not the same. andybarton Posted December 8, 2006 Author Share #7  Posted December 8, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Profiles would be handy, but just to support the DMR at this stage would be a huge leap forward...  I can see Profiles and Leica DNG support coming in version 2, then, at this rate. A £200 paid for upgrade, no doubt. I don't think I have ever bought software before that has actually been of no use to me at all.
mitchell Posted December 8, 2006 Share #8 Â Posted December 8, 2006 I added my 2 cents to Aperture feedback. Â Hope it works. Â Best, Â Mitchell
canlogic Posted December 8, 2006 Share #9 Â Posted December 8, 2006 Wow. I bought Aperture when it first came out, as a matter of fact I bought a Mac just to run it. I have found it to be truly excellent and I have just about every raw converter out there includeing C1 pro. Mind you up till now it has been for my 1DMKII and 5D stuff so I am getting anxious about my M8 stuff as it is building up. For now I convert in C1 then import into Aperture. Giulio Zanni Posted December 9, 2006 Share #10 Â Posted December 9, 2006 It would be useful to post the request also on the Aperture discussion forum. Apple does read it. Â Regards, Giulio
kbingman Posted December 9, 2006 Share #11 Â Posted December 9, 2006 I added my bit as well. Â I have actually been using Aperture with Raw + Jpeg and then using to it sort and rate the files, then I use C1 to actually convert them. This sounds weird, but I just did a big project with the M8 this way and it worked out really well. You do have to use a little Apple script to import both the DNGs and the Jpegs, but it is worth the effort. Â I got so used to using Aperture with my Nikon and scans that I really can't give it up at this point. Â I actually talked to the local Leica rep about it and he mentioned that some of the Apple peope at Photokina were very excited about the M8 and hoped that it would supported soon. We'll see. peterv Posted December 10, 2006 Share #12 Â Posted December 10, 2006 It's a good thing you started this thread. Did my bit by using your link above. (this is the 3rd time I asked/mailed them about this) Â Cheers
msr Posted December 12, 2006 Share #13 Â Posted December 12, 2006 Bump. Â Still no M8 DNG support in Version 1.52. Another round of submissions to Apple seem to be in order. Â Malcolm
canlogic Posted December 12, 2006 Share #14 Â Posted December 12, 2006 DNG support will be in an OS update not in the Aperture update, hopefully this month.
pat308 Posted December 12, 2006 Share #15 Â Posted December 12, 2006 DNG support will be in an OS update not in the Aperture update, hopefully this month. Â Have you heard from Apple that they are working on DNG support? It would be quite coup for Adobe if they got Apple to sign on to DNG support. spylaw4 Posted December 12, 2006 Share #18 Â Posted December 12, 2006 There is an update due very soon (10.4.9) I believe which is likely to be the last update before 10.5 comes out spring 2007. So if it is not in the update then ....... :-(
Giulio Zanni Posted December 12, 2006 Share #19 Â Posted December 12, 2006 It is ridiculous, I am really disappointed...How much more time will I have to wait in order to have everything in place, meaning: my M8 fully updated and corrected, my lenses coded and with the UV/IR filters AND the possibility to work my DNG files in Aperture? Yes Apple needs support for many more cameras and backs, but what a fantastic program it is. Kevin.
