Advertisement Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Hi Guest guy_mancuso, Take a look here Yosemite M8 trip. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sean_reid Posted December 11, 2006 Share #222 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Sean, I have a 50 Summilux pre-ASPH. Do you think it is worth the money to upgrade to the ASPH? Â Hi Cindy, Â I don't know because I haven't compared the two. How do you like your current one on the M8? If you're happy, I wouldn't switch. Â Cheers, Â Sean
ddp Posted December 11, 2006 Share #223 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Guy - your first image here: Â http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/11067-yosemite-m8-trip-9.html#post115123 Â And the other shallow DOF work with the 50 'Lux are precisely what I've been waiting to see from the M8. Yes, one could shoot them with a 5D, D2X or whatever - but there is something extra in the Leica glass that pushes it that extra step. Very nice work indeed... Â Regarding the magenta type cast on the skin tones inside - with mixed lighting, this is nothing that shocking. I've been seeing it for 6 years now - why is anyone surprised here? I deal with it on a daily basis, and by that I mean - I can fix it when I see it now. Anyone taking the M8 to task on something like this should also know that there are fixes for it. Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 11, 2006 Share #224 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Dan that one was ISO 160 with the 21mm 2.8 asph at 1/180 of a second and it was very overcast i would guess maybe F4 or 5.
robsteve Posted December 11, 2006 Author Share #225 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Here is Guy preparing his special Habenero pepper sauce for our pepper stuffed steaks. Â I used the Voigtlander 15mm and a SF-20 with an off camera cord. At this close distance, even the 15mm doesn't have enough DOF to get everything in focus. Â There was no UV-IR filter used and the sweater was dark blue. Â
robsteve Posted December 11, 2006 Author Share #226 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Guy is shown here shooting with his whole M8 kit of lenses in the small bag over his shoulder. Â This was one of the first shots I made with the M8 I borrowed from Guy. A few minutes later I realized I was shooting jpegs, so this is a resize of a camera shot Jpeg, not a DNG. rvaubel Posted December 11, 2006 Share #228  Posted December 11, 2006 Here is Guy preparing his special Habenero pepper sauce for our pepper stuffed steaks. I used the Voigtlander 15mm and a SF-20 with an off camera cord. At this close distance, even the 15mm doesn't have enough DOF to get everything in focus.  There was no UV-IR filter used and the sweater was dark blue.   For superwide shots like this, I don't even care about the purple sweater thing. These kind of shots tend to be pretty informal and reference blacks are few and far between. Not many weddings are going to be shot with a 15mm Heliar. Its a good thing to because the filter adapter for the Heliar is about 4 times the size of the lens! And it takes 77mm filters! No filters for this baby or the 12mm.  Rex

Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 11, 2006 Share #231  Posted December 11, 2006 Okay this was my absolute worst capture of the weekend. The first one is just not going to work , Tungsten light and , daylight in the background, plus some daylight from camera side and even worse under exposed. second one if i try to get the face good than it is starting to recover. I must admit this is a major shift and the file held on quite well. This is NOT normal. Not exactly perfect but not bad either and done in Raw Developer Welcome, dear visitor! carstenw Posted December 11, 2006 Share #233 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Guy, it sounds like you ended up using the 50 Lux Asph a lot, and the Noctilux not very much. What are your thoughts on the Noctilux? Will you be taking any formal portraits with the (fixed) M8, and if so, with which lens? Â Thanks for the great trip report! Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 11, 2006 Share #234 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Carsten i really like the 50 lux , the Noctilux is a great lens don't get me wrong but it's highlight is at f1 after that i wonder what the point is when stopped down it is not better than the Lux. I guess the question is how often will you use it at f1 plus some backgrounds look way out there and are distracting. It's also a big lens and slower to focus although i had no trouble since i am used to that kind of heft from the R lenses and harder focus because your pushing a lot of elements. Maybe some of this is the cost also. Even though I buy a lot of lense i still have to think about this and having 2 50mm lenses that value over 5k makes me think twice. I admit i have too many already but the 50mm lux is really a sweetheart . Now there is talk of the non -asph has some softer bokeh than the Asph one and maybe someone can comment on that but looking at the images posted that i shot with the Lux and looking at the bokeh it really does look nice and pleasing and along with a 75mm cron is a great combo. But folks really need to try some of these before you purchase too. They all have there certain strengths. The M line is a tougher call to make becuase there are more choices than the R . i know you love your 80 Lux in the R and really is not a great lens until F2 anyway. sometimes i think we get to wrapped up in the bokeh and not what the lens can do all the time on other subject. maybe that is why i like the lux better is becuase it just can do more overall. Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 11, 2006 Share #235 Â Posted December 11, 2006 Well I use the 180 for portraits on the DMR but with the M it will be the 75 cron or the 90 elmarit 2.8 which i just got and i do like this lens a lot and for the money is a real sweet heart. To me 66mm effective focal length is just too short. I just like long lenses for portraits

Guest magyarman Posted December 11, 2006 Share #238  Posted December 11, 2006 I agree buy the 5D than. This leaves more available to the folks that actually know the difference  Why Leica guys always has to end in nasty saying against someone else? You tell only who have Leica knows what means good quality image, this completely not true. So many best fotos around whole of world make by people who doesn't hear ever about Leica. You tell 10mp 1,3x camera is better from 12mp 1,0x camera bat all of fotos from Yosemite place does not shows any better, just worst in purpur colour from black short which yourself wearing!!! I say, if you want prove M8 is better then 5D you must to show this with fotos not nasty saying against someone.
Jamie Roberts Posted December 11, 2006 Share #239 Â Posted December 11, 2006 {snipped}I say, if you want prove M8 is better then 5D you must to show this with fotos not nasty saying against someone. Â Blasko--it's been shown already, in all kinds of places on the Internet. You won't find it in this thread, ok? It's a fun thread. People here get tired of the Canon / Leica stuff--even those of us who use both. Â Go read Sean Reid's review / comparison of the 5d / M8; they will help you understand why folks react to you the way they do. Regardless of your intent, it seems like you are trying to start a fight.
