Yosemite M8 trip

What I have noticed, is the the M8 (with IR filter on lens) does fine with the more olive-toned Mediteranean and darker complexions than it does with ones that tend toward ruddy lighter tones. In our group, Guy, Mike and Mark all have more olive-toned complexions while Robert and I more ruddy. In many M8 frames, Robert and I don't look quite right in that we appear more blotchy than we are in real life, yet the others all look pretty good.

Hey Jack--I guess what I'm saying is that my whole family (and probably 50 % of my clients) have ruddy lighter tones--probably more ruddy than yours, actually--and I just don't see the magenta blotchiness in my shots--not in any light; not even mixed light.

I'm not using filters, though, either.

And wait till you get to a real monitor before you decide whether you're "pale" or not, man! :)

Seriously, though, my point wasn't that I was trying to color correct for "you" or "your real skin tone" (never having seen it), but that a global change in the profile will affect the entire cast, without affecting other things in the image adversely, and without tweaking things individually--skin tones among them, even with a web JPEG.

Did I say how jealous I am of you guys out there? Man, I'm jealous. What a great trip!!

Guy,

Now that you have worked with the 50 Lux side-by-side this week, with the 50 Noctilux, what are your thoughts? I would like to try the Noctilux, but it would probably mean selling the Lux.

Your shots from this trip are all fantastic. I am really enjoying them.

Cindy,

do not sell the LUX, it is awesome. The solution should be to wait longer and get the Nocti in addition.

I personally only own the Nocti, and it is great for certain AV shots, but it is much heavier than the LUX (which I already tried several times) and does not reach the superb quality of the LUX, which can be especially interesting in combination with the M8.

Maybe you can get a second hand Nocti? These should come for around half or two/thirds of the new price :-)

Last two shots of the day both withthe 50 lux wide open . The second shot is Jack and i heading home and low and behold we drove to the end of the rainbow. Shot through the windshield but who cares it just was a great moment

Guy,

these are all great shots, I really like them !!!

Also if this might have been answered already - did you do all the M8 shots with IR filters on? What is your general experience up till now?

Here is another one from today in Yosemite. I used the DMR and 21-35mm for this one.

Robert,

Your DMR shot is stunning. I love the way the blues are captured by Leicas.

Thank you Guy, Allen, and Peter for the advice about the Noctilux vs Lux. I was afraid you'd say that!:)

Jamie/Steve:

I fall on the side that the M8 in its current trim with the filtered lens still falls short on some skin tones. It's not horrible, but not fully accurate either and IMO this fact needs to be addressed by Leica either by firmware update or if necessary, a replacement of the sensors' IR cut filter.

Cheers,

Jack

The image-related problems of the M8 will persist until Leica eats its pride and hires some people who know about color and have decent color vision.

Historically, the camera makers did accurate shutters and sharp lenses while the film manufacturers did the pleasing color.

This has now changed, the camera maker has to do color, but Leica has not realised how essential and difficult the problem is.

Really like Raw developer for B&W stuff. I like the tones you can apply

I agree with you about raw developer but you may also want to use C1 with the JFI profiles Sean recommends. I found them to be awesome and for the $16 they charge a real bargain. Whoops, just did a test and the JFI profiles work perfectly in Raw Developer as well.

I agree with Guy, the colors I've been getting out of the DMR have been nothing short of fantastic (Like Robert's photo above): rich clean accurate color, no gaudy over-saturation, WB has been great (firmware 1.1) and the latitude and tonal gradation are beautiful; the files rarely need much more than a minor tweak.

I'm no match for Guy as an imagist, but here are a few quickly processed files. Been a great trip and we're heading home soon, but maybe some more images to post after a more thorough image edit session:

And totally out of context, but an interesting grab shot while stretching our legs:

yes and it works great. They even have curves you can download that allow you to use Jamies excellent profiles for C1. The curve emulates C1. ....Peter

I have downloaded the demo to try the program out. Can you point me to the place where you can download curves to emulate Jamie's C1 profiles for the M8? When i tried using the profile I downloaded from Jamie's site directly into Raw Developer I got a very strange, dark, very contrasty result.

Steve--you can't use the profiles for C1 directly in RAW developer. But the author of RAW Developer has adopted them. You can read about that and get the download link here:

Yes a lot of these are with the 50 lux and I had the Nocti in my bag at the time. I really like the Lux. All of my shots had the IR filters on , just a few from the other day with the 90 only did not. My new 28m F2 I stopped using since it has a elelment out of whack sharp in the corner and soft in the middle . So I will send that back for a exchange from Tony at popflash. Does not hurt to test a lens when you buy them just in case something is off. This actually was the first time for me with Leica lenses
