sell it at a profit? no seriously, i'd avoid it like the plague. if you bought it you'd be be prosecuted and eventually found out via updates, repairs or morally wrong and turning yourself in and classified as a criminal if/when you get caught. it's important to register your camera asap after purchase and if you can, to insure it but even that doesn't guarantee you an easy payout if it's stolen. if you own a leica, don't just be careful be sheise careful. if you come across something suspicious, report it to leica and on this forum

Simple - Just say "Hey, cool, Man! Can I check it out?!" Stick in an SD card*, snap the seller's portrait while noting serial number, say "Ooo, that shutter sounds like it has a lot of lag. No, thanks!" take out card, hand camera back - then deliver the image on the card to the nearest cop or bobby, along with the number you noted and general description of camera.

Guess Mr. Thompson had the same idea - but my way, the prosecuting attorney has no moral dilemma regarding "accesory".

*Actually, there'd probably already be one in it - doubt the thief would know how to find it.

Hmm

I actually have an experience relating to this. In the UK (and other places) the passport warranty means that everyone sends in their cards, so each item is connected with someone.

I bought a 35mm summilux from an ebay dealer with a 400 sale 100% record (at a sensible price), and promptly sent it off to Leica UK for coding.

Next thing I knew I had the police on the phone discussing prosecuting me for handling stolen goods. The lens was sent straight back to the owner (by Leica) and I was quite lucky not to be charged (I don't think there is a valid defence against handling stolen goods).

Luckily for me, the ebay dealer was honest, and refunded my money - everyone was very civilised, and there was much telephone conversation - it did go back to a theft in London a few weeks earlier, and an agent of the ebay dealer who had suspended disbelief - I think it was probably him who lost the money, but I'm not certain.

Bottom line is that if you buy a stolen M camera or lens, then you will almost certainly get 'busted' if you send it back to a dealer, or to Leica at any point, as they have lists of stolen kit.

Not an experience I wish to repeat!

all the best

What would you do if offered an M9 or even M8 for $20.00 complete with a really nice 50mm Summilux?

Well, that depends... I would buy it for sure. However, I'm not sure what I would do with it. Good and Bad are battling in my head on this one... let's hope I never get this offer. I may not do the right thing. I'd also be scared to give the camera to some fool who tricked me into thinking their serial number matched.

Moral Dilemma No 2.

You're wandering through a "car boot sale" market and you happen upon a dear old lady with her stall and a selection of nice but old treasures she has decided to sell. Buried amongst the boxes of porcelain ornaments and tarnished silverware you find a scuffed leather camera case/cover and inside you find the used but otherwise mint condition original MP3 with a summilux 50 attached.

Do you ask:

(1) How much for the old camera missus?.

(2) I'll take this, but do you have any more of those old glass things on the front?.;)

(3) Do you double her asking price of £50 and smile at her shock of your generosity as she hurries to take £100 from you before you may change your mind?.:p

(4) Or do you advise her as to the true value of the MP3 and advise she have it sold through a professional dealer and wish her well with her new found treasure?.

I would pay her the asking price and not feel guilty at all.

Now answer the same questions if the dear old lady was changed to an arrogant old/young lady/man.

Is there any difference?, and why?.

Hi Eoin

Easy - no dilemma at all (especially as I don't really know what it would be worth).

Say to her that it's worth a lot more than she's priced it at, and that she might be better to sell it to a dealer, but, if she would prefer to take it now then I'd give her £200 for it.

And what else? Why don't you Karate chop him ala Star Trek then carry him on your Flying saucer to the nearest

police station?

Honestly, your scenario is the funniest thing i read in a looooong time.

...Most people buying from an addict

:D Oh dear. Stereotyping now too?

Someone selling a nine on the cheap is more likely to be madoffs fallout or someone who bought the thing based on the hype and who comes to the conclusion its beyond em.

Twenty bucks though .... I mean really. Maybe they are a movie star and were given the thing free and cant be bothered with it.

offered a stolen M9, what to do?

Best is not to buy. Even not at 20$. Never ever! If everybody will act this way it will dry out the market for that kind goods... and if nobody buys - nobody will make business - nobody will anymore take off M's this way...

didn't that sound great?! :o
