Yes Enrique, I firmly believe that B&W should be acquired in camera and not during PP. This is called Knowing what you're Doing.

Converting Color images to B&W is Blasphemy, travesty. Of course it is.

I believe that a good photographer sees the image before clicking. And he sees it in either Color or B&W. There are no in-betweens. No salvaging bad color shots by converting them to B&W.

There is no substitute to Knowing what you're Doing.

But you don't see in B&W through the viewfinder, so what's the difference between using the on-camera B&W and simply doing it in post, where you may have more options? (besides the fact that doing it in post simply gives you more flexibility)

And doesn't on-camera B&W prevent us from shooting raw? I ask this with sincerity as I'm new to my M9 and haven't used the on-camera B&W. Is there some tangible advantage (emphasis on tangible) to shooting directly in B&W? Did I waste money on Silver Efex?

Was it ever stated that I was not voicing my opinion? Did azzo finally read my post scorrectly and finally understood? Wow, that was long.

Stormholloway: when I open the fridge I have a choice between color or B&W films. If I choose a BW film, I will definitely see in BW through the viewfinder for the rest of the roll.

I guarantee you that I will not photograph the same scenes with a color film. Never!

There should be a study of the scene before clicking, not after the fact on a computer screen.

That's one of several possible MOs, and if you actually succeed with that, I'm green with envy. However, there are other modes which are as valid for other people as yours is for you.

Painters, composers, writers and other kinds of artists differ wildly in their MOs. Where one has the complete work fully formed in the head before taking the tool to hand, others take many iterations or gradually approach what they deem the proper result.

Wow, I'm surprised that Ned's cogent arguments for what he calls purity in his art were taken by some —who, apparently, have some difficulty understanding the written word — as statements of absolute fact. It is obvious to this observer, that Ned's statements are opinion. I don't think he cares whether you agree or not; nor should he.
