melissah Posted May 10, 2010 Share #122 Posted May 10, 2010 there are bad photographers, and there are bad photoshop users. i seen horrendous stuff come out of a tradition darkroom. they are ALL just tools. to say that the image is made when the shutter is complete is limiting. personally i agree that your mind should be made up when you take a shot. a vision, an idea, a something. i do think you sorely mis-understand photoshop and the modern digital era. in your shot of the barber, which im sure you will leave as is, and thats your image/right... the mans shirt is blown out. it doesnt add to the photo. being able to see the tones in those whites (which you might be able to accomplish in PP) would only add to this already good shot. if in a traditional DR one would burn those whites down. why? because the super hot whites take my eye of your central subject. i dont think thats what you had in mind when you shot this did you? overly-romanticizing leica and the "leica shot" (as if IT had a definitive...) is sweet but not very realistic or, accurate. IMO.

azzo Posted May 10, 2010 Share #126 Posted May 10, 2010 neddy boy, You talk as though you believe you're the next HCB, or Kertesz or Gibson or .. or .. to name a few ! You mention one of my photos somewhere, that of an elderly sitting on a bench doing nothing. I think I know which one you're refering to but, I'm not sure. Point the image out, then we can talk ! Now, let us take your elderly image as an example. .. Let us forget about the blown highlights for a moment. ... I see a man sitting down reading something or whatever he's doing but, ... .. the way I see it, this image has no feelings .. no emotions. .. Good light is not enough. IMHO, an image has to move you instintly, it strikes a note. .... This one doesn't !

I am quite happy and proud of whatever I choose to achieve. But we digress. Your take on the image is exactly what I thought it would be. It seems you simply cannot accept a photograph to reflect a scene exactly how it was, live. Why can't an image of a Barber simply be an image of a Barber? Why does it necessarily have to be striking, super deep or romantic to death? Why can't a simple image of a Dude stay that way without being transformed, imposterized, photoshopped and draganized exponentially until it starts looking like a scene from a horror movie? Simple, and even boring images, do not need an extra schizophrenic enhancement. They can stand on their own.

melissah Posted May 11, 2010 Share #131 Posted May 11, 2010 Melissah,Go talk to my scanner for the blown shirt. You really sound like a dslr geek. actually im not. in the 30 yrs. ive taken pictures ive only used digital for about 8. as for talking to your scanner, it too is just a tool. a scanner is very simple to set up to get correct results. i suggest the manual. i also suggest his book Amazon.com: A Little Book of Manners for Boys: A Game Plan for Getting Along with Others (9780736901284): Bob Barnes, Emilie Barnes, Michal Sparks: Books as for the man just sitting there in an environment its doesnt offer much. im really not sure what your problem with modern technology is. you repeatedly say very negative things about people using photoshop or any PP program. why is that? what is the difference if i correct an image in photoshop or in a wet darkroom? i have the skills to do both, one is just healthier, faster and more precise for me. you dont here me saying "oh those film idiots! why would they spend all that time, money and cost to the environment when they could accomplish the same thing digitally?" i dont say that because its the final image that matters. if you get to it in a wetroom, and i in a computer, and both are beautiful, who cares? yet you come at us with so much hate. and that i just dont get. melissah Posted May 12, 2010 Share #135 Posted May 12, 2010 If people cannot be civil to each other in this thread, it will be closed. Andy, Respectfully please leave this thread open, it might be a little heated I realize But at the same time I believe there are some interesting (albeit ancient) topics Being explored. IMO Ned is simply being rude. Maybe it's because he's not terribly worldly or learned. He appears to believe that those of us you use modern technology either are mediocre Photogs or not photogs at all. Or maybe he's a Luddite? I don't know and personally I would like to. Maybe thru this discussion he can be pointed in the direction of learning how to work in a digital darkroom and what it can do rather than just trash it. Hopefully before his (kodacrome 64?) runs out. I truly do believe his stance comes from lack of knowledge. While I feel some of this discussion is testy, to close it would be worse. Were big children here and most can defend ourselves. Personally I like ivans input. Ivan is a great photographer with a huge presence here. I look forward to his images And rarely get an opportunity to read his opinions and/or read a banter like the current one. Maybe we can just consider it a critique. Although elements of this discussion are close to being unpleasant, perhaps with Further discussion we can get to the other side of better understanding rather than just close the door? likalar Posted May 12, 2010 Share #137 Posted May 12, 2010 Mitchell, the dance costumes in the window shot is priceless! Excellent! Alberto, the steamed crab shot is amazing for character and strong tones. So many other excellent photos in this thread, too; would love to comment on more, but the pasta is ready. azzo Posted May 12, 2010 Share #138 Posted May 12, 2010 Sure! I can't ask for better.Azzo, stop stalking me. @ NB32, You playing the 'victim' now ? Who are you trying to kid ? Get some manners and respect others. Stop throwing accusations and mud at others. Act and answer and don't shy away when confronted. I've repeatedly asked you to point out to what you're refering to and I still got no reply back from you. I'm ready to answer any of your accusations. I've absolutely no problem with that ! azzo Posted May 12, 2010 Share #139 Posted May 12, 2010 And as a true gentleman, I won't mind melissaH. Point in case. Typical of you NB32. You throw mud. You're then obviously confronted but you choose to shy away again ! Melissa would have been more than capable of holding up to an 'argument' with you IMO !
