Don't worry about guarantee. Replacing the dot does not impact that.:)

Yep, my M8 had new leather cover and the dot scratched with dremel by previous owner and Leica replaced the dot under warranty among other things. I also had used third party battery and they didn't seem to mind about that either. Great service.

I removed the red dot as well and had it replaced by a black dot from DAG. It is the first thing I did when the M9 arrived weeks ago. You can easily grab the word "Leica" with two finger nails and carefully rotate it until it comes loose. Next I removed some glue with a cotton tip with rubbing alcohol. I only used a tiny bit. Next I stuck the black dot from DAG on which is self adhesive. The result:

Love the mods you've done, Geesbert.

I'm also thinking of replacing the red dot with the black one. I, however, like the white paint on the badge. I'm actually bummed that it was too easy to remove the white paint. I took it out to photograph the body when I first got it. At the back where it says "Made in Germany," the white paint came off completely from the letter 'i' in "in" without my knowledge. I'm guessing it happened as I was putting the body back inside its plastic cover before putting it back in its presentation box. I actually want to know how to preserve the darn paint, or whatever is left of it!

As for the strap, I didn't like how big the metal loop looked close to the camera body. I think it cheapens it. The strap itself looked flimsy. I like the strap that came with my Digilux 3 that I've never used. It comes with white Leica logos painted on each end of the wide strap. I used my old Pentax ES II's triangular split rings and used a circular nylon spacer around the metal tab attached to the body as a backing. That thing will never scratch the body!

I'll post a photo later.

Thanks for the tip for removing and replacing the red logo, Mac. Instruction was very clear.

The 'M9" black paint comes off very easily. For my first one I used a very mild solvent and a dull knife, which worked perfectly.

For my second one, I figured I'd test it out first before doing any modifications, so I slapped a piece of gaffers tape over the M9. The other day I was going to take the tape off and remove the logo, and sure enough most of the white paint came off with the gaffers tape. The small amount of remaining tape was removed with the dull knife, but no solvent this time.

So the take away is that if you want to remove the lettering it's very easy, but if you want to keep the lettering don't cover it with gaffers tape:eek:

I prefer the camera without the lettering. But I don't mind the red dot for some reason, or at least not enough to do anything about it.

But on the topic of replacing white-paint lettering, I noticed that my 35 Summicron Black Paint has lost some of the paint in the distance scale numbers. It's not a big deal at this point, but is there a specific paint that can be used to get the numbers white again?

Actually the Leica buckles are quite a good design, it is impossible to touch the camera with the metal ring, no scratching possible. only the small plastic bumper on the camera gets in contact with the plastic part of the buckle. I tried many other buckles, but non work so perfektly with the leica lugs and the best thing is they don't slip the tiniest amount, which can't be said of any other I tried.

I am eying one of these A&A leather belts, but the one I am using is extremely comfortable, very soft and folds away nicely, which helps when I put the camera in a coat pocket, equiped with an Elmar 50,

A well observed ironic comment! I think......?

Hardly any irony. The topic of the thread is "pimping one's M9." It's everyman to his own.

Geesbert, I really think the original buckle that came with the camera is well-designed. However, I just didn't like the size of the metal loop--it was too big IMO. It hardly scratches, I know, but if you twist the loop at the end while attached to the camera, you will see how at some point (if the camera was just dropped in a bag without care) the sides can still manage to rub on the body of the camera.

I took a quick photo of what I've done to show you what I meant (remember, this is what I want for my M9, others will obviously differ). I got the idea of the plastic spacer from Luigi (except he uses leather).

The neoprene strap on top of the camera is a plain strap from Optech that I meant to use as I like how it feels on my neck (until I saw my Digilux 3 strap). Now I have two I can choose from, and still have the original strap available to me. The white Leica Logo just matched the white M9 marking that I liked.

I got it installed here:

Will van Manen Kamera-Service vof

index.html

I bought the tab off ebay, it's a 35mm summicron pre-asph tab, was below 10$

Will is great, very quick turnaround at decent prices.

Could you give a little more info on how to find the tab. This is my only lens without a tab, and would really like to add one.

Much appreciated.

If the camera was ever sent to Leica for some sort of servicing, I wonder if they might replace the dot and/or the white paint.

I know that Leica NJ checked everything over when they serviced my M8.2 and lenses, and made free adjustments for things I didn't specifically request. For me, this was a good thing.
