Advertisement Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Hi Indecisive, Take a look here New M9 in London ... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TacTZilla Posted December 2, 2009 Share #2  Posted December 2, 2009 Thanks for the heads up.  I just phoned though and he seems very casual about it all. He said he wasn't sure how many he was getting and he thought he had buyers for 'most' of them. I said I had money waiting and was happy to buy one straight away if he had any spare no messing. He didn't seem to think that was any great deal and didn't even want to take my phone number. Very short sighted way of doing business. They'll all be scrabbling for sales once the initial demand has been met.  It's amazing the different kind of service that is offered from shop to shop.  I've had very decent dealings with Jacob's Digital (Manchester) and Richard Caplan.  Richard C. took a deposit of £1,000 and said he will honor the price even in the New Year after the VAT increase. He was very nice on the phone. I hope to be able to buy from him.  Cheers B
wattsy Posted December 2, 2009 Share #3 Â Posted December 2, 2009 Maybe Len thought you were being a bit pushy? He's very loyal to existing and long standing customers and probably thought there were a few more he could ring around to find buyers for the M9s coming in. mikeyt Posted December 2, 2009 Share #4 Â Posted December 2, 2009 I've never been overwhelmed by RG lewis, they always seem very stand-offish. Like you, i've got the money ready to spend yet they seem not to give a damn. I'm not sure who it was I was talking to there, but he made it very clear he wasnt taking me seriously and wouldnt even take money as a deposit. Â So I went to my local dealer in Cambridge and, though I might have to wait a bit longer, will be quite happy to avoid RG lewis. Â they may well look after existing customers first, and if I was an existing customer I guess I'd expect that, but all existing customers were new once and it shouldnt be a rite of passage to 'qualify' as a client to whom they will be friendly. chris_tribble Posted December 2, 2009 Share #5 Â Posted December 2, 2009 OH dear - this begins to sound like the old days when we were all busy slagging off The Classic Camera... In my experience (over 15 years or so) RG Lewis has always looked after its customers really really well - which is why a lot of us keep on going back. My understanding of the current status of supplies is that a) London has been starved over the last 6 weeks in order to ensure a better supplier to dealers outside the capital, and RG Lewis is getting some M9s in soon, but they're pretty well already spoken for (no deposits required). I'm on the list for my 2nd M9 body and am glad I am working with a dealer I can trust, who gives fair prices on commission sales and has always been able to help me out with loaned kit, quick replacements, insurance quotes and even letting me use the shop as a PO box when I've had stuff being couriered back from Leica and couldn't guarantee being at home to receive. Â RG Lewis? They're OK...
cliffp Posted December 2, 2009 Share #6 Â Posted December 2, 2009 I also think R G Lewis are ok. They have a large waiting list and don't either want to get anyone's hopes up or to allow anyone to jump the queue. Â I do sympathise with TacTZilla though if he feels he has been given a vague indication of the situation.
Indecisive Posted December 2, 2009 Author Share #7 Â Posted December 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I suspect he is just going down his waiting list, and MY FAULT for thinking he might have a gap in it. Sorry B! Â Remember he is the only London dealer (except Mayfair) NOT to take a deposit for M9s. That's a more old fashioned (trusting) way of doing business in my book. gravastar Posted December 2, 2009 Share #10 Â Posted December 2, 2009 Oh dear! This is where we all come out of the woodwork, worms that we are . Â I've dealt with RG Lewis for 30+ years and found their service to be outstanding. That's why I remain with them although there are other excellent dealers. Â They've negotiated with Leica on my behalf to get excessive servicing costs reduced and always gone out of their way to obtain or loan items in short supply such as the MATE (I had the last spare from the Leica Acadamie) and Frankenfinder. They had to go through 3 early M8s before we found one free of defects. This was done with courtesy and efficiency while dealing with Leica UK. The latest instance being arranging express shipping of a new 24mm Summilux from Solms so that I'd have it in time for a recent visit to the US. As has been said they don't require deposits, basing their order book on trust. In short I can't find fault with their service. Â Bob.

Goldie Posted December 2, 2009 Share #13  Posted December 2, 2009 You can get spectacles these days to correct extreme myopia... Regards,  Bill  You're bang on the nail with that one! Anyone who prefers dealing with faceless servers rather than real human beings is beyond saving. But back to RGLewis, the last time I was in, they said they had orders for some 40 M9's, so its hardly surprising they were slightly underwhelmed by a faceless telephone enquiry/offer. TacTZilla Posted December 2, 2009 Share #16  Posted December 2, 2009 Hi.  Thanks for your comments about your experiences.  I'm glad to hear they are a good dealer. I was just stating my experience to the original poster and to let anyone else who may have been interested know the score.  I wasn't being pushy at all and I certainly wasn't trying to jump any queues. The original poster made it sound like there may be spare units available, hence my phone call. I just made an inquiry and stated I was ready to buy if there was availability. I just find it surprising that someone (even a faceless someone) can call a store saying they had £5k to spend and they aren't even interested in taking your details. As other posters are showing, once you become a customer and are treated well you often become a customer for a long time. Just seems a little short sighted to me, but they obviously don't need the custom.  Cheers B

You need a face to talk to because you're expecting that the camera will have some issues and you need to exchange. May be it's also time to boycott such types of $7K camera that has problems.... ronaldh Posted December 3, 2009 Share #18  Posted December 3, 2009 I have dealt with Len and his staff at RG Lewis for many years. They are very knowledgeable and always friendly, helpful and patient.  Of course they have cost me a lot of money in photo gear - but that's another story altogether. Snapper UK Posted December 4, 2009 Share #19  Posted December 4, 2009 Len and Barry at RG Lewis are true Leica stars and have kept the flag flying throughout the tough times. They sorted me out with my M9 very early on. It might be slightly old fashioned but they definitely return the loyalty their clients give them.
