thompsonkirk Posted December 1, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was pleased to see that the 35mm framelines of the M9 – though pretty sloppy with a 35mm lens – are devilishly accurate when a 40mm Summicron is mounted & I'm zone-focused on 10 ft / 3m. So I guess this will be my standard lens for those framelines! (35 Summicron will live on M8u.) Kirk
Advertisement Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Hi thompsonkirk, Take a look here M9's accurate '40mm' framelines. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted December 1, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 1, 2009 Ditto with film Ms, M8 and R-D1 as well. Pleased to see that it's the same with the M9. Now the 35mm frame lines will be less accurate, in fact inaccurate, for close-ups i guess. Could you confirm it's still true for the M9?
Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 1, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 1, 2009 lct. I call them "generous" if you frame in the 35mm frame-lines on the M9 you are SURE to have the image in the file, with room to spare. .
lct Posted December 1, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 1, 2009 You mean with the 40/2?
Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 2, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 2, 2009 No I mean they are comfortable with the 35mm - don't have a 40mm. .
jaques Posted December 2, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 2, 2009 are you saying the 40mm lens is actually more accurately framed than the 35mm? if that is the case it makes the CV 1.4 40mm Ultron look like very good value for money. That is one cheap lens...

At long to medium distance yes but for close-ups no, at least with earlier Ms than the M9. To bring up 35mm framelines one have to file the flange of 40mm lenses though. Easy to do with Summicron-C and M-Rokkor 40/2 but i've never tried this with the Nokton 40/1.4 so far.
gyoung Posted December 2, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 2, 2009 This has prompted me to do a quick comparison of the various combinations I have, a recent purchase has been a Panasonic G1, with the 20mm f/1.7, the 'crop factor for m4/3 is supposes to be x2 so the 20mm should equate to 40mm on a 35mm standard frame. The G1 claims a 100% accurate viefinder, the 20mm lens on it shows pretty well exactly the same field of view as an M6ttl (0.72) with a Summicron 35 asph. The M3 with the old Summicron with the 'specs' shows a slightly wider field of view, the same as a Nikon FM2 with 35/2 AF. Unfortunatley I don't have a Nikon with a 100% viewfinder to try! and of course there will I suspect be more variation in actual focal length with a reflex lens than with the Leica lenses. All these are done out the window at the front of the house looking at the houses on the opposite side of the road which the M3 and 135 say are 20m away If I have the time one day I will do a comparison of what actually appears on the film, anyway they all seem accurate enough for what I do.
