Problems with old electronic components

I'm sorry, it may seem like I'm such a jinx today, but I heard from a mechanic that old electronic parts can also be a problem in Leicas in a way that hadn't occured to me before. At least the R4 and M6 were mentioned as containing some old electronic parts, which are supposed to lead the electricity from one place to another (sorry about the idiotic and vague terminology:)) but which have lost their qualities during time so that if one tries to work with them (take off for repair, for instance), they can snap in two like a potato chip.

Has anyone experienced such problems with their components and has there been a substitute? I'm once again sorry for being so imprecise, but if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, I believe the problem isn't much to worry about.

I heared that they don't use that material in newer camera electronics, including the M7, if I understood correctly, and maybe also the MP 2003. So this may also be one of the differences between the M6 and MP.
