Metz 40MZ-3I

You won't get the M9's TTL flash functions with that unit, but if you're happy with its Auto and Manual modes you can use the SCA301 standard foot (which fits any standard hotshoe).

Alternatively, get the latest version of the SCA3502 adapter (current version is M5). This will give you A and M (and maybe a ready light in the finder) with the 40Mz-3i, and is ready for TTL if you buy one of the current digital SCA Mecablitzes.

You will have a ready light with the 3502 SCA adapter. The camera will also upload ISO to the flash, and focal length (for the motorized reflector) if the lenses are coded. All this works so well that you will probably not miss the TTL function.

I don't have an M9 but do have a 40MZ-3, 3502M4 adapter, SF24D and M7's. Since the SF24D will work in TTL flash mode with the M9,

"The LEICA SF 24D electronic flash unit is designed to be compact and also to provide the maximum distance between the flash reflector and the camera lens, which minimizes the risk of red eye when photographing people and animals. With the LEICA M9, M8.2, M8, M7 and M6 TTL the light output is controlled by its TTL flash exposure meter"

I would not be so fast to conclude that the 40MZ with proper adapter will not work in TTL flash mode with the M9. Try it.-Dick

No harm trying, but the Mecablitz compatibility matrix at http://www.metz.de/fileadmin/fm-dam/Download/Homepage_Englisch/Photo_Electronic/SCA_Archiv/SCA_Adapter_Archive_GB.pdf says it won't do TTL with the M8 or M8.2 or any Nikon or Canon DSLR, so it seems pretty unlikely to work with the M9.

The TTL function built into the Metz 40 is old-style metering-from-the-film-surface, entirely different from the GNC function of M8 and M9 cameras -- hence the different designation. The only thing they have in common is that both meter light through the lens, but the electronics, the timing sequence and the metering are completely incompatible.
