leicamann Posted November 26, 2009 Share #1  Posted November 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) This famous bird is supposed to be the most intelligent of the parrots and the actual one that pirates had as companions.  I am documenting all of these birds because all of our public facilities after the so called "Olympics" happen, will be shut down. A huge number of our cultural landmarks will be lost due to financial cannibalization from various levels of government , I am trying my best to be on-top of which places will be closed forever...all this for 21 days of entertainment  Cheers, JRM  Tech: Leica R9( work of art) DMR/ R180mm F3.4 APO Telyt.. opened up in 16bit in FlexColor....then finished in Photoshop.... zero image editing..lets hope it shows up fine, I have listened to all your suggestions, lest see if it works?  OK looks super.. Advertisement Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Hi leicamann, Take a look here Grey Parrot. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted November 26, 2009 Share #2 Â Posted November 26, 2009 John - Â Absolutely exquisite in every way, and the most handsome parrot shot I can recall seeing. Parrots demand a lot of attention, and if anyone decides to acquire one (which I do not recommend since they really belong in their native wild) be certain that you are ready to spend many hours a day every day with the bird. Â Stuny, Â In the USA the legal parrot trade is with breeder raised birds. It's been illegal to trade in wild caught birds for about 20+ years. There is a huge demand for parrots who need to be re-homed for many different reasons. While these birds can be very challanging the are very rewarding. So I agree that supporting the trade in wild caught birds (post restrictions) is wrong I do encourage those who are willing to take on the challange of re-homing a legal parrot....they are truly amazing guys! leicanut2 Posted November 28, 2009 Share #8  Posted November 28, 2009 They had a special on TV about Alex the African Gray parrot he was at some college where they work with him everyday. He even has a computer with large buttons he can push that brings up pictures like a flock of parrots stuff like that. From what I can remmember he has the brain power of a three year old boy or girl. Was a interesting program. SAD ALEX HAS DIED http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/10/science/10cnd-parrot.html?ex=1347076800&en=9d76dbd4da092f14&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss  Cheers Jan
leicamann Posted November 28, 2009 Author Share #9  Posted November 28, 2009 Mike , Bob , Ece , Jan..thank you all for your comments and contribution to this thread, Sadly..very sadly Alex is dead... there have been some postings on Youtube suggesting that the bird was"abused scientifically" and that a sign of this was that parrots when they are unhappy start picking off their feathers, this was very evident in the last video taken of Alex, African Gray's normally live longer than that. Myself I think DR Pepperberg loved this bird too much to subject it to abuse.  Here is the link to the Alex Foundation  The Alex Foundation- Home page     Cheers, JRM
osscat Posted January 13, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted January 13, 2010 I have a teenage African Grey which I took as a rescue nine months ago after he was dumped on a doorstep in a cardboard box - he came oven ready and has just begun to interact with us but we are not allowed to touch - he will take food and demand food but no touchy - he is not so bald as he was but is still rather scruffy. Â I call him Claude because he has lost some of his claws, presumably because he was forced to stand in his own faeces and got infected - he has a huge cage but refuses to sit inside so we just let him sit on his perch on top. Â About seven miles from us there is the home of the World Parrot Trust they have a re-homing service and a large aviary where the public are educated about and entertained by parrots. Â This is the one and only time Claude made physical contact November '09: Â Osscat
Sailronin Posted January 13, 2010 Share #11 Â Posted January 13, 2010 Great of you to take him in. Grey's are so smart and (usually) loving, a shame someone treated him so poorly. Looks like he's warming up to your kindness.
fotografr Posted January 13, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted January 13, 2010 Beautiful work, John--just stunning. I've not heard anything about the trouble facing your public facilities after the Olympics, but it hardly seems a worthwhile trade-off.
leicamann Posted January 13, 2010 Author Share #13 Â Posted January 13, 2010 Osscat and Brent , thank you so much for looking and commenting. Â Yes unfortunately we are going to be moving into a Phase..here in Vancouver where many ,many of our beloved services and social/ cultural places are going to be "axed" to pay for the Olympics, we are yet to see whats going to go down with the "Security" issues, 1 billion..1 billion is being spent for 2 weeks worth of security How insane is that?? Â Osscat ... so this bird was just "dropped off" in a box? How sad... well looks like its amongst friends. Â Thanks again everyone for sharing.....
