35mm Summicron: Type 2 or 3 ?

I am in the market for a 35 'cron to use with my M8.2. From what I have read online, I know that the Type 2 is an 8 element design, and has the "tab" to move the aperture ring, while the Type 3 is a 6 element design, with the more conventional aperture ring.

Is there a substantial difference in the performance of these two models? (wide open and at the corners) (My budget won't stretch to the Type 4 or the Asph. models.)

Any comment welcome!

Both Type 2 and Type 3 are 6-elements double gausian design.

In fact, they share very similar optical design.

Type 2 got a little tab to control the aperture ring while Type 3 doesn't.

On the other hand, Type 3 front element and opening is a bit larger for improved optical performance.

Both of them are very good performers, priced lower than Type 1, 4 and asph.

They are priced lower than a v.4 for a reason. They have a pretty harsh bokeh, i.e. unsharp parts of the picture have a 'busy' look. The v.4 is a very nice lens indeed, so nice, I discovered when I put one on my M9 for some street photography, that I have now recalled it to duty and packed it off to Solms for six bit coding. It deserves it.

Also, type 3 have 39mm filter size while type 2 have Series 7 filters.

This is incorrect. All 35mm Summicrons accept 39mm filters. The Series VII filters fit into the hood that was supplied with the Ver. 2 and 3 Summicron but, everybody in his right mind still used the 39mm filter attached directly to the lens.

What Lars says about the versions 2 and 3 is correct - they were no particularly popular lenses, compared to version 1 and version 4. On the M8, the version 4 35mm Summicron is a stellar performer, not as contrasty as the ASPH version. Would not give mine up for nothing.... Of course, YMMV....

Best,

Jan
